The times are a changin’, but let’s stop worrying (too much)

Come gather ‘round people, working from home. And admit that the the waters around you have grown. You better start Snapchattin’ or you'll sink like a stone. Your old road is rapidly aging. Blah blah... enough!

If you’re like me (i.e. no longer a teenager!), the relentless tsunami of technology may haunt your 3am mind with feelings of panic, overwhelm and fear that you can’t keep up.

Yes, Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon and the cool kids are swallowing industries, and the digital era can’t be ignored, BUT listening too closely to the hype can paralyse small business owners.

Slow and steady wins the marathon

Fredy Namdin summed this up nicely in Flying Solo’s Member Lounge this week. He was talking about all the fancy theories about selling and marketing, but it equally applies to all the shiny digital tools we have at our fingertips.

“None of those really matter when we’re dealing with real customers. Selling is much more than just trying to smart-sweet-talk customers. It is about consistency, discipline, patience, and organisation. It takes a long time to build up those customers - but the return is worth it. Selling is the easiest job in the world - as long as you keep doing it - the hard way.”

Tech is (mostly) a means to an end

The same core qualities that made a business successful in 1950, will work today. Things like purpose, communication, service, consistency, value, quality and, most importantly, good people. Innovative tech is a great way to market and deliver your products and services, but for most solo business owners it’s NOT the product.

Embrace technology, but remember that repeat business and traditional word-of-mouth continues to be the top source of new business for 84% of soloists.

Stay true to your core

Flying Solo started when blogging, Facebook and iPhones weren’t really ‘things’, and as we tackle our second decade I know everything will change again, and faster! But the mission remains the same: “To help people create businesses, and lives, they love.”

Our core values haven’t changed since we wrote this vision and values document in 2007!

Embrace change, but don’t let it shake your foundations.

If speed is killing you, you’re not alone and it’s not new

I searched the word ‘slow’ on Flying Solo and found a decade of confessions and advice from soloists feeling the pressure: 5 things I delete from life when things get crazy (2017)  It’s ok to go slow (2014), Note to self: slow down, In pursuit of precious boredom (2010), Hurry up and slow down, Simplify your life (2008) Find inner calm in a busy day (2005).

All advice as good then as it will be in 2020.
