How do I submit an article for Flying Solo?

Rather than accept one off submissions, we form long-term partnerships with experts. For more information please review the Contributor Guidelines.

How do I find out about meetups near me?

Check out the meetup section in our forums and read our Guide To Meetups if you’d like to start one of your own.

I’m overwhelmed! Where do I start?

Our ‘start here‘ page will help you get oriented.

I love what you do and want to spread the word!

Thank you! Please tell your friends and fellow business owners and make use our social share icons that appear around the site.

Can I reproduce Flying Solo content on my own site/newsletter?

We’re happy to support this wherever possible, please get in touch to let us know what you would like to use and where. Assuming permission is given, we’ll ask you to follow some basic guidelines on attribution, frequency, sign offs and so on.

How can I advertise/promote on Flying Solo?

We offer a range of ways to get in front of our audience. Premium Membership includes a range of exposure opportunities across Flying Solo.  All our display advertising options are managed by our agency. Read an overview of our audience and advertising options here.

Are you interested in affiliate arrangements, contra deals, joint ventures or giveaways for your members?

As a rule we don’t form these sorts of relationships. However, if you are interested in getting in front of our audience you could review our advertising options, which are summarised here.

I’m from a PR agency. Do you run product reviews or company/product profiles?

We don’t. Our editorial policy states there needs to be a clear distinction between advertising and other content. As reviews don’t fit into either category, we prefer to avoid them. We do have integrated sponsorships and advertorials available as part of our advertising offerings.

Do you guys present at or run small business events?

Yes, we love to get out and about across the country. Read more about our events and presentations and watch a video on our events page. Please make contact here and we’ll get back to you. In the meantime you can read about our team here.

I have a business idea. Can you help me develop it?

While we don’t offer one-on-one business advice, an effective way for you to get some help would be via our forums. It is a very active, friendly community with thousands of members willing to offer help and support.

Additionally, our business directory lists many local small business experts who could help you with specific requirements such as legal advice and formulating a business plan.

Can you recommend a decent web designer/accountant/business coach?

Have a browse of our business directory! Alternatively you could add a post to our ‘need a resource?’ section in our forum, which you’ll find here. However, please check the guidelines before posting. For example we do accept requests for business resources, but not employment ads.

I’ve got two businesses. Can I list both?

We’re not set up to accommodate multiple businesses per member. However, because email addresses are the unique member identifier, you are welcome to sign up both businesses as members and to list them separately in the directory. You’ll need to sign up two separate email addresses for the process to go through smoothly.

While this is fine for the directory listings, if you are planning to get involved in the forums you may want to just choose one account and name to post under to avoid confusion.

Do I qualify for a tax deduction if I buy a book or become a premium member?

Very likely, yes. Where business expenses are directly related to professional development and/or business marketing and promotion, you should not have a problem offsetting these expenses against your tax liabilities. If in doubt talk to your accountant.

A fellow member has done me wrong! Can you ban them or investigate?

Inevitably this situation pops up from time to time. However, Flying Solo has a policy not to get involved in resolving business disputes between business owners, as trying to judge the fairness or otherwise of complaints is not a role we can play.

We suggest you continue to follow up directly with the business to resolve the issue and/or report it to any relevant authorities. If there is material posted on the Flying Solo website or forums that you feel we should be aware of please let us know and we’ll review against our guidelines.

I’d like to talk to you on the phone, even meet up. How do I do that?

Always send us a note through our contact form first. We’ll respond quick-smart and are happy to talk and meet whenever it’s necessary.

Can I list my event on your site?

Unfortunately we don’t have an events calendar, however it may be something you could post on our forums in the Networking Events section. We do have rules around promotion on the forums, which you’ll see the guidelines at the top of that page.

If you are active in the forums, you may also want to add a link in your forum signature that appears under posts and include details of your event there. You can add or edit your signature here (once logged in).

Can I add a directory listing to your site if I am a free member?

No, because directory listings are part of our premium membership offering. Memberships start from as little as $9.95+GST per month and come with a host of other benefits. More information is here.

If you would prefer to remain a free member, taking advantage of our newsletters, making article comments and participating in the forums can be valuable way to build a profile at no cost. The best place to start would be to introduce yourself via our forums on the introductions thread. We do have strict rules around promotion, but the intro thread is where you are able to talk about your business. You can also add a signature to your forum posts with a link to your website so this will appear beneath any post you make. To add your signature, head here once logged in.

Membership: Technical queries

I want to delete my account. How do I do this?

Please specify whether you want to:

1) Cancel your paid membership. Please see the answer to this question.
2) Remove your directory listing? You will need to contact us.
3) Unsubscribe from the newsletter? Just click on the ‘unsubscribe’ link at the foot of each newsletter.
4) Remove posts/identity from the Flying Solo forum? There’s no DIY fix but we can help.
5) Remove you from everywhere? We can do this on your behalf too.

I’m having login problems. What can I do?

Please try emptying your cache to clear cookies and give it one more go. If that doesn’t work (and you haven’t thrown anything at your computer) get in touch here and we’ll get one of our tech peeps to fix you up just as quickly as possible.

Can I become a member if I am not based in Australia?

Flying Solo membership is only for businesses based in Australia. You are of course still very welcome to browse the forums and read articles.

I’m a subscriber to your newsletter but haven’t been receiving them. Why?

That’s no good! The first step is to check your Junk folder. Next, try adding news[at]flyingsolo.com.au to your Safe Sender list (or White List). This will ensure that future messages from us and/or the newsletter will get through to you.

Failing this, it may be worth unsubscribing and resubscribing with a different email address. You’ll find these options at the bottom right of every Flying Solo newsletter.

I’ve updated my email address within membership but newsletters are going to the old address.

Sorry about that, the website and newsletter actually run on two separate systems so you’ll need to update your details in both spots. Click ‘update subscription preferences’ at the foot of each newsletter or contact us and we can do this for you.

How do I make changes to my forum profile?

When you are logged into the site, head to the forums at www.flyingsolo.com.au/forums and click on your forum name (top right of the forum navigation). You will then see a menu where you can edit your personal details and settings. If anything needs explaining, get in touch.

I appear to have been banned in the forum. What did I do?

Chances are you’ve not been following our community guidelines. One of the reasons our forums are so popular is because we moderate them very closely. Please read the guidelines carefully and if you still feel we’ve been harsh, get in touch here. We have been known to be over-zealous, and we also have a range of automated spam management tools that sometimes filter genuine posters.

Premium Membership: General queries

What are the advantages of Business Class membership over Community membership?

The key differences are outlined here.

If I sign up for Premium Membership, will that give me a backlink and anchor text to my website?

If you upgrade to Premium Membership you will be able to include backlinks to your website within the business description in your directory listing. Plus, Business Class membership includes a Spotlight profile which allows for further backlinks and anchor text. See examples here www.flyingsolo.com.au/spotlight.

How do I cancel my membership?

To cancel or change your membership status, you need to login to your account and click your name at the top left of the site (the link will say ‘My account’ if you haven’t yet entered a name). Under the ‘My Account’ tab you will see a link to ‘Cancel your membership’.

Please be aware, access to the paid member area will cease immediately upon cancellation, even if you’ve ‘paid up’ to a date beyond the date you cancel. So if it’s your intention to cancel after a short period, diarise to do it the day before your membership expires to get maximum value.

My paid listing hasn’t brought me leads. Why?

We are proud to have many long-term members achieving great results, and the rate of paid members who redeem the money back guarantee is less than 2%, so we have great confidence in the product. That said, some do have a disappointing experience. Hopefully the fact that membership is underwritten by our guarantee mitigates this disappointment.

Reasons for an apparently unsuccessful listing differ between individuals but include:

  • Source of queries can be hard to track (queries may come direct from your website rather than a Flying Solo contact form)
  • The offering not highly targeted to micro business owners
  • A highly competitive segment

For Business Class members:

  • Non participation in Spotlight segment
  • Listing/Spotlight not live for long enough.

How do I update my directory listing?

Premium Members: login and click on the Directory tab where you’ll be able to edit your information.

Premium Membership: Payment & upgrade queries

I’m having problems upgrading my membership

Sorry to hear that! Usually this indicates a problem within the payment processing system. Please try one more time and if it reoccurs then get in touch to let us know where the process fails, i.e. is it within Stripe, PayPal or on the Flying Solo site before or after the payment step?

Do you only accept payment via PayPal or Stripe?

While these payment systems cover most eventualities, we can issue an invoice for annual Premium Memberships if you prefer to pay by EFT. Simply contact us here and we’ll sort it out for you.

How do I change the account my membership costs are debited from? Or update my credit card details?

If you paid via PayPal and would like to update your credit card details, you will need to do this via PayPal. If you log in to your PayPal account, you will find the options you need under ‘Bank accounts & cards’.

If you paid via Stripe, please get in touch and we can make any changes for you.

Can you issue me a tax invoice? What’s your ABN?

Tax invoices from Flying Solo are available on request – these are issued annually. In the meantime each time your membership payments are deducted via your payments provider, they email you a receipt and we suggest you retain these for your records.

Our ABN is 98 114 592 504

My payment provider has sent me a ‘payment failed’ message. Why?

Typically this gets sent out if the credit or debit card you have attached to your account at PayPal has expired. This will require updating directly with PayPal.

Why has more than one payment been debited?

This very occasionally happens and is usually connected to card expiry/renewal. If you have been wrongly charged please contact us and we’ll investigate further.

I’ve cancelled my membership but my payment provider is telling me our payment has not gone through and we are in arrears. Why?

Occasionally, users who cancel using Flying Solo’s system do not automatically have their profiled cancelled within PayPal or Stripe. To stop this happening, please be sure to cancel your subscription from within your payment provider.

I operate two businesses. Can I promote them both on the one premium membership?

Our listings are set up to cater for promoting one business only, however we encourage those with two businesses to set up a second premium membership. To do this, simply sign up for a new account using a different email address.

If you’d prefer to keep one account, you are welcome to mention your second business in the long description of your listing.
