I was looking for a new member intro area too and actually introduced myself in the http://www.flyingsolo.com.au/forums/other-discussions/42-tell-me-little-about-yourself.html thread because I couldn’t find one.
With respect to those who come in, introduce themselves and never come back. some forums have a ruling about how many posts you can do before having a sigblock and/or leaving links.
I think introductions are important – it allows everyone to do a full on explanation about themselves in their first post, get it over and done with and then get involved in discussions. And it allows everyone a single place to go to learn about the other members.
