I’d suggest overscripting is bad – people can subconsciously tell when someone is leaning on a script, and respond badly to it – they want to have conversations on the phone, not recitals. Scripts should be less prescriptive and more suggestive, and leave room for branching and customisation (i.e. if its raining make a joke about the weather, etc).

The best way, though, is to experiment on the phone, find what works and codify that into a script.

You could even try recording yourself on the phone (don’t record the conversation, that’s possibly illegal, but put a tape recorder on your desk, so you only hear yourself speaking, and its fine), and then listen back to it and see what worked and what didn’t.
