I think most businesses would benefit well from having paid hosting and their own domains. It gives them more control over their websites. I wonder how many actually think about backups and what would they do if one of those sites went off line for a period of time, or out of business? What happens to their site then? This, for me, is the most important aspect of having control of your own site.

In fact I think this is much more likely to happen if your website is self hosted. Most small business owners don’t know they have to back up their websites, most don’t want to worry about it. The cloud platform have this stuff sussed. It’s the backyard self hosting where this stuff is a problem. Your local web developer is much more likely to go out of business than a large cloud platform like WordPress or Shopify.
