Hi Terence, that article suggests a correlation betwen high rankings and some social signals which as you state and as I mentioned previously, is not any proof of anything, it may be that stuff which is highly ranked gets more sharing (i.e. the causality is reversed).
I agree that social buzz should be a signal of some input along with the hundreds of other signals (as other ‘good reputation’ signals should be) but so far nobody seems able to show any significant influence definitively.
