It really depends on what the app is and who will use it.
We’ve developed 2 apps in house, both for Android:
GSM Analysis app
we did this one on Android with the aim of being able to put custom ROMs on phones and access low level GSM Module. It’s worked to a certain extent, but has been a pain because devices have different GSM modules etc.
However, I don’t believe we could actually do this on iOS at all.
SMS Gateway
Again, we did this on Android, if you are going to leave a phone on the desk running 24/7 to gateway your SMS messages are you going to head down to AllPhones and pay $100 for a PAYG or use a $600 iPhone? Just made sense, can’t see the market to do an iPhone one.
However, we are working on a public use app and we will be offering it on all platforms because we are aiming for the complete public to use it.
I think a lot of companies are commisioning apps that are little more than interfaces to their website or offer no real function. That is a waste of time, spend that money on making your website mobile friendly, I’m looking at you Flash and you in the corner, drop down CSS menus.
