I’m expecting it to be primarily just a blog site but I also wanted to have the option to perhaps sell/give ebooks and maybe have some paid advertising. Both these things seem to be fairly prescribed on free blog sites.

Lindsay, you’d be fine with some hostgator hosting and a WordPress site. There’s no need to over complicate things. Especially if you’re learning.
