!important is used in CSS to override the standard cascading hierarchy and have a rule that overrides (considered more important) than the rule that would otherwise apply. Definitely useful but if overused can be messy to maintain and could lead to bad structure and in turn performance. Not sure of any compatibility issues though and as far as I’m aware has been part of the standard since 1.0, although IE6 didn’t support it.
