A canonical tag or canonical URL is basically describing an easier to remember URL that links to a your standard url that might have a search query not always a search query, but certainly something less pretty or optimised). Canonical tags/urls are normally just called Search Engine Friendly (SEF) URL’s.

Normal URL example “https://mystore.com/products/index.php?id=123”
But the canonical URL might be “https://mystore.com/products/shirts/greentshirt/

Both URL’s would still work, just one is obviously better for SEO and people to remember.
