Hi – if you are going to claim car expenses you must keep a logbook for 6 weeks. The ATO has recommendations of details for that.

I am not an accountant, so am just sharing my own experience.
In your accounts you can do expenses either immediately, or adjust at end of year. I used to do it immediately. (I no longer claim my car as I hardly use it.) Alternatively, you can do the costs per km method as on the ATO website.

Sample entry
Fuel expenses $50
Personal (Drawings) 40% $20
Fuel expenses -$20
Total $50

If you set up a style then you can just duplicate or copy for each time you make a transaction.

Regarding the whole car you will need to ask your accountant about that because depreciation is trickier and is separate to ongoing expenses.
