Depending on the State you are residing in, it is now unlawful for anyone outside the dentistry industry to professionally whiten teeth.

In addition, beauty salons have been taken to court as a result of damage to their clients and even with the loophole in place have lost their case and have been forced to pay tens of thousands of dollars in compensation to their victim.

As of 1 May 2013 teeth whitening products containing concentrations of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide greater than this must be supplied solely by registered dental practitioners as part of their dental practice.

This effectively shuts down the practice of non dentists performing this dangerous treatment.
