I’m not sure that I would write off business cards yet.
Business cards are an asset when you need to quickly give someone your contact details and they are standing in front of you.
That happens at networking functions, and it can happen in other everyday occasions: any time that I’m chatting to someone and they ask what I do. When they find out that I’m a Graphic Designer, sometimes the response is that they’re looking for a Graphic Designer and they will ask for my card.
I don’t expect people to hold onto my card forever, but it’s a good way to get the first phone call or email from them.
Email signatures can be very effective if they contain the right information, but they’re only useful if you have someone’s email address in the first place.
