Hi Ecomad,

When registering a .com.au you need to fulfil one of the following criteria;

1. Domain name is an Exact Match Abbreviation or Acronym of your Entity or Trading Name.
2. Close and substantial connection between the domain name and the operations of your Entity.

As such, as long as your business has a “Close and substantial connection between the domain name and the operations of your Entity.” you should be fine registering it under the ABN of the main company.

That being said, you should look at protecting the brand name via a trading name and trade mark. ASIC do the registration for business names now, so you can register it from the 1 central location rather than having to register it in each state.

This will also protect you in the event that someone else registers the trading name and disputes that they are entitled to the domain name over you.

FYI – you can register a .com domain name without an ABN, although obviously a .au domain name holds more value in the eyes of an Australian user (but it is something to consider if you want to take your brand globally).

Cheers,
Blake
