Lodging the tax return and schedules

Companies that derived assessable income in 2016–17 must lodge a tax return for 2016–17. Companies that are carrying forward losses that exceed $1,000 to 2017–18 must also lodge a tax return for 2016–17 even if no assessable income has been derived in that income year.

So if you had more than $1000 in claimable deductions to carry forward as losses then you must lodge. Even if nil income. If you have any income you must also lodge. If none of these then a nil return / return not necessary should be notified to the ATO to avoid penalty.
