This is an interesting space and certainly one that can be quite profitable during both operational phase and at sale of business phase. We have somewhere between 12 and 15 of these ventures as current clients (all in Vic) and they range from smaller footprint metro convenience stores (organic foods and higher end items in good suburbs) all the way up to several regional town IGAs. Most of our client stores are quite successful but we have certainly seen some fail because they were not ideally managed – apparently there is a quite a skill in getting the product mix right.

Anyway, feel free to contact us if you proceed. I would not rule out buying an existing store but that can require a reasonable commitment of funds. If you are low on funding (access to less than $1m), then the smaller format store is probably the best starting point.
