    Hi Charliebean

We have recently started a storage and 3PL business as an add on to our wholesale business called palletstorage.com.au located in Arndell Park (Western Sydney)

We have been supplying local retailers such as Spotlight, Bunnings, Lincraft, Target and Kmart over the last twenty years.

We can receive and store your goods as well as order pick/packs. We are not a multi national, we are flexible and cater for smaller business. Hope this helps.

    Hi Charliebean
What does your business involve and in terms of 3PL- what are you wanting to achieve by outsourcing ?

    Hi Charliebean,

Yes, please do update us on how you went with this query? I posted something similar recently, little reply, although there have been many updates in the last few days from various ‘new’ forumites who appear to specialise in 3PL..

Although having spoken to a few of these, i am still finding expectations quite high from the 3PL’s order/volume side that is still being a little problematic for moi :)

    Look forward to an update

    Jason

Hi SR, can you share some of their expectations and costs etc without naming them? Would help as I’m about to start reaching out to some shortly also.

    Hi Dave

Its basically volume driven vs costs vs client expectations (users such as us).

Most i have engaged are expecting 50+ and some even wanting 100 plus picks per week going out before even touching us.. and note this is not related to our current business and being questioned for a second business that is easier to manage.

Costs are another tricky one as you basically pay every time your item is touched, mind you i understand this as you are using labour each time as well.. But some hide costs, some incorporate landing costs into one cost at the end and so forth.. Most importantly there are not a lot of transparent ones out there, in fact i only found 2 although i think their facilities may not work well with my expectations which leads me into the third issue being client..

My expectations were simple, want a business that will spend time to understand me, my products and have an understanding of the online space that i operate in.. Unfortunately, not one operator could exhibit directly each of the 3 components – they were either a logistics company ‘wanting’ business and reached out to anyone they thought money would come from, until they declined due to volumes OR they were someone using space in their warehouse with no logistics experience and merely wanted ‘rent’ money OR didnt take an interest in what i was trying to achieve..

Please note, i am not a difficult client just know what i need and what i may need – so the ability to ‘partner’ with someone who understands potential growth and harmony is and will be important to me…

After much time, and a few replies i have still to follow that could be promising, i have started to look into doing this ourselves.. Our own fulfilment and also offering this to other parties.

Long story short, one of our Directors has over 8 years experience in 3PL (set up a Melbourne office for large international) + small business centric with strong relationship skills and willingness to understand our clients needs + capability with existing logistics contracts, freight and existing warehouse geared for storage/warehousing/logistics (3PL)… We are only 2 weeks into looking at this and have started working with a few clients already..

This whole exercise has been extremely tiring for me, if you want more info dont hesitate to post a reply/email or even call as happy to help.. My advice will be ignoring what i do but happy to point out all the issues i had, what i needed to look for and what was important to me that i seen as a gap.. Because something else i noted was that the 3pls offered me things they thought were GREAT although i reality they were not great for me, were good for them, as all i needed was storage + picking/packing and someone to understand me.

Jeez, i said too much.. sorry for the long reply, its such a hard decision..

    Other issues included:
    * seeing stock if i needed to
    * lack of business model understanding ( them of mine )
    * lack of communication or delivery at a level i needed to hear it
    * cost – and the unknown
    * lack of flexibility, all offered ‘we are flexible as you need’ although when pressed on what this meant i never understood it as it was generally labour related and not stock nor business related

Ok i am going.. very emotional and volatile topic to discuss raise.

Thanks Jason, that’s actually quite helpful. I might look at some shared warehouse space, pay a junior casual to pick and pack if it gets too hard.

    Hi Bisal

Hope you are well mate, and thanks for the reply.

As you are newish around here, may i suggest that you may want to pop along to the intro yourself section and maybe add a signature to your posts (from the control panel – grey bar at top of forum) with your email and web site? Only say this as jumping into a friendly forum like this and typing similar replies (albeit relevant :) ) to the OP’s with recommendations to web site and email is sometimes frowned upon…

Personally, i find simply helping others with info and being forthright with knowledge is awesome to get positive opportunities from a place like this.. Its funny, most people will hit your email signature to have a squiz at what you do but if you post a reply with your info in it to garnish business (again albeit relevant, so definitely not having a go as such) it tends to be overlooked..

Make wishing you all the best though, and look forward to reading more about you in the Intro yourself section.

    Cheers
    Jason
