    Hi there,

I am currently employed as a trainer/presenter in professional development for teachers/schools (in the public service) and am looking to fly solo next year. I have run businesses in this area in the past, with mixed success and am looking for advice specific to delivering training/services within education.

I have a strong network where I live, but am wary that it may take a while for ‘local’ schools to take me on. I am able to travel and have done this internationally, so have no fear seeking work outside of Australia.

What am I after? I would like to talk with someone that is working as a trainer/consultant in education, someone that doesn’t see me as a threat. It would ease my mind and further inspire me to talk to someone else that is having a crack and making a go of it.

I would like advice on generating brand and business.

I am looking to open the doors in January 2013, so have time to prepare; I am developing a solid business plan, and am now thinking about finding an accountant, a bookkeeper and a PR firm that understands the education field.

That is it for now, but you can be sure I will be here again, looking for more advice.

Please if you are in the field of education or not, feel free to have a chat and offer some advice.

………..now it is time to get back to that business plan!

I have had a good look around the forum and have found no active members even remotely linked to education, so I guess my next step is to ask that if you know anyone that may be able to help, then please let them know about me, or pass on their details to me.

Hi wickstim – I bookmarked this site a while ago to come back to as I am interested in creating video based training programs an being an RTO could add some credibility to this, essentially they specialise in setting people up as Registered Training Organisations (RTOs).

I am sure if you get in touch with them they may be able to give you some useful pointers and are unlikely to consider you as a threat as you could potentially be a future customer – http://f4solutions.com.au/

Thanks so much Jayne, I appreciate it. I am in the NT and am still employed in the field of choice so am unable to discuss my plans and feel pretty isolated. Flying solo has been an inspiration.

Hi Dane, thanks heaps. I wouldn’t have thought of checking this group out, so it just goes to prove how valuable it is to ask for help.

I will post back here if I have any luck.

    Cheers
    Tim

    Hi Tim

I would love to connect. Currently I am transitioning from full time student support in a local school, through part time (started 3 weeks ago) to a speaker, author and coach. Specialising in areas like Cybersafety and student engagement. Offering myself to do talks in schools to students, their parents and also teacher p.d.

Is that the sort of area you are moving into?

Hi Nigel, great to hear from you, let’s stay in touch. Cyber safety is a hot topic at the moment and schools and parents are unsure what to do, so this is a great time to fill a niche.
Yes, this is sort of the area I am getting into, though my skills and knowledge are in working with mobile devices, like iPads, social media in schools (Facebook twitter etc), games based learning, Google apps in education, blogging and pretty much anything that is innovative in education.
Really looking to chat with people in our ‘area’ with strategies, concerns, ideas. Have hoped to catch up with people in the same position as myself (that’s you) and for others that have already successfully walked the path, particularly in education.
So I will start a thread in ‘networking’ in the forum for those of us in the education sector, so that we can catch up there. I will call it ‘ the business of education’. Let’s hope we can find a few more educators to join us.
