I thought GumTree the first directory listed……was a dead end or what ever it is called……doesn’t show up in your back links???

    Cheers

    Hi Amanda,

Thanks for taking the time to assemble and post this list.

The problem is that there are a couple of crucial questions that must be answered before a Directory is any use for link building.

    1. Can the SEs access the directory’s page that contains your link?
    2. Is the link to your website in a form of code that the SEs can “read”?

If the answer to either of these questions is “NO”, then there is no point in submitting your site to the directory as the link to it cannot be counted by a search engine.

I only checked 3 of the directories listed and 2 of them gave me a “NO” to one of these questions.

I estimate around 30% of websites suffer from similar problems so there are large numbers of website development companies out there who don’t know this.

This same links access problem is widely encountered on news release sites and Social Media sites.

    Regs,

    John W

This list is really handy but it is now a bit out of date. Anyway, I don’t agree that these directories are no good. I have had quite a few decent leads from them over the years.

A couple of old timers are not on the list.

    1 Shopseek.com.au

    2. Thinkingbusiness.com.au

    3. Clickfind.com.au

All have free options and I have only ever paid for Shopseek because it regularly feeds me leads.

Thanks TJ. I signed up for Yelp but didn’t realise it’s not really a directory in the sense that you can’t add your own business to it? It seemed to be just for reviews of other businesses, unless I’m missing something?
