This question has probably been asked lots of times, but what are the developers and
digital marketing experts opinions on Big Commerce as a platform.

Currently have word press and woo commerce and since we are a product driven business thought that with the future all going online that an easy to use ecommerce platform like shopify big commerce, neto was the way to go.

Pros and Cons?

Hey Roxanne,

Generally speaking, hosted platforms such as the ones you mentioned provide advantages in terms of maintenance (you don’t need to worry about updating your servers with the latest security patches), speed to market with lovely themes/templates, good SEO out of the box, and performance of the site that is very hard to beat (unless you have a large IT team at your disposal). They also integrate with a bunch of 3rd party Apps to provide extended functionality, however if you have specific requirements that don’t fit inside the box you may be out of luck.

They all provide free trials so I’d recommend signing up and taking them for a spin.

HTH, Gavin.

Hello @roxanne40,

This is a pretty broad question and one that gets asked often. Firstly WordPress and Woocommerce (WP) are not going away anytime soon. WordPress is one of the most used software systems worldwide. In general you need a developer to help get WP setup and running unless you have some technical capabilities. WP and similar open source systems are setup to run on your own hosting account or server. That will also need to be constantly maintained for fixes, patches and vulnerabilities. If your website processes credit cards the the site and hosting need to be PCI DSS compliant which can be painful.

Hosted platforms or software as a service work on the principal of taking away from the site owner all of the technical heavy lifting. The downside is that you own your content, and maybe design, but not the website platform. Both BigCommerce and Shopify are USA based and host all the content in the USA and also their fees are in US$. So be careful to calculate the exchange rates and also check for additional fees like transaction fees or in Bigcommerce’s case limits on revenue volumes.

Neto like eCorner is Australian based and your hosting and your monthly fees are in Australian dollars.

Frankly the features in all the services are similar. It comes down to your own requirements, experience and support requirements.

Hosted platform are less likely to be able to be customised with additional special features or facilities. So its a case of what you see is what you get.

Let me know if you would like an eCorner demo.

Regards

John

I have used bigcommerce and found the systems easy to use, great templates and the back end was nice. We went back to wordpress as using big commerce on its own we could not get the organic SEO results we wanted with this project – we were doing ok but easier with wordpress. An alternative would have been hybrid wordpress + big commerce set up.
