    Hi everyone,

As I have mentioned before my husband & I run a business in construction, and over the past 10 years the business has run along nicely with very little advertising, marketing, or anything. Basically, all through referrals. But there has been a downturn in the construction industry in general in the past few years, and while it hasn’t yet affected us, we need to gear things up in case it does. We also may be looking at tendering out for some bigger government projects and the like, and we feel that we don’t have an image, a brand or anything like that.

We still see ourselves as a mum & dad business (where hubby goes off to work and the wife does the books), but in reality we are far from that. We run a large business with a healthy turnover, employ over 10 people and have build up some great business assets.

So what I am asking is… where do we start with creating a brand or an image that we can market. I guess I need some steps to follow – I am thinking logo, website, marketing templates, a slogan, that sort of thing.

Any feedback would be appreciated (but this has turned into a bit of a ramble, so well done if you made it to the end!!)

Sorry I also should have added that any recommendations of businesses that can do this sort of work for us would be greatly appreciated (but of course I would like to have some idea of the process first so I know the right questions to ask and whether the businesses we speak to can offer all the services we need!)

    What exciting times for you!

If you’re a premium member of Flying Solo, we’ve recently added a great ebook on branding to our member resources. (You’ll find them under the ‘My account’ tab, in the bottom right hand corner of the green banner at the top of the page).

There are some very experienced folk around here who can help with what you’re looking for, so stand by and I’m sure some of them will put their hands up to help.

In the meantime, you may like to take a browse through the branding section of our directory.

I’ll be fascinated to see what develops for you!
    Jayne

The first thing I would do is get hold of a branding expert. Leigh from the Golden Goose is one from the forums who always gives great advice.

From there you will be able to develop your branding (colours, logo, style guide) will start you thinking about your audience, your USP, point of difference, target market etc.

Once you have your branding, you can move onto your website (these two steps are often taken in tandem, so while you are getting your branding sorted you are also starting to think about your website)

With a website you need to be thinking about the look and feel of the site, the user experience, goals of the site, how you wish to market yourself.

A copywriter is someone whom may be useful as well. They can help with articulating your vision of the company into words that you can use in your branding , your website, and any other marketing materials.

Ideally, having someone that can work with you through the entire process would be the best approach.

    Good luck with it!

Most brands do not reflect the true nature of the organization and tend to exaggerate.

A quality branding consultant will show you how their work directly generates contracts. If they can’t, you are taking a big and unnecessary risk.

Ideally, you want to build brand without gambling on brand building. That has more to do with your sales process than marketing.

It’s tangible, measurable and you don’t have to wait months to see the results.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

Matthew that is exactly the sort of guide I was looking for! I always work from lists with everything I do, but had no idea how to even start this to-do list! Now the process all looks a bit clearer!

    bi Kelly
i just made a post about this in another thread here is the link

    http://www.flyingsolo.com.au/forums/sales-marketing/24929-marketing-my-online-business.html

sounds to me that you are in the position to pay for someone to do this for you unless you have time tio learn it and implement it which still costs your time
try goog offline marketing seo web designers if you want to build a website and you should have one shop around for prices tell them what you want to gain from having a site this will most likely come with a monthly managing fee you have to pay to host a website this should only be around $20 per month but then you will need to optimize the website too make it show up on google this can take up to 6 months to see result you can outsource this with a seo company or social media company, your options are also to skip the website and just have a fanpage on face book and have someone to manage it , i would recommend that you Google some other companies doing the sam as you and see what they are doing, until then uou van see the other branding optoins i made in the other link but at least make sure you are on google maps and local directories and classified ads hopr that helps a little
