    Hi,

I have just started my company and have set up a Sole Tradership?

Am I legally allowed to call myself a Director on my website?

If not, what should I call myself?

    Thanks,

    Layla.

If you have started a company you’re not a sole trader.

I believe that by company she just means business… It is worth every entrepreneurs (spelling? haha) time to take a few days out and learn the fundamentals of tax, business and contract law – I borrowed some legal textbooks and trawled through the ATO website’s archives – might sound boring but I actually found it quite fascinating… maybe I missed my calling as a lawyer :(

Doing so will save you major headaches and allow you to save legal fees and avoid potential tricky situations.

    Hi Layla,

If you are a Sole Trader with a Business (not a CompanY) then you can call yourself a “Proprietor”.

    Regards

I did mean business not company.

I think I will go with Proprietor on my website and put no job title on my bsuness cards.

    Thanks for all the advice,

    Layla.

You can call yourself anything you like
It is your business. You might be the director of sales with a shortened title
I prefer the title Managing Executive because of it’s initials :)

Why not create yourself a unique title?
I’ve seen Director of Awesome before.
It’s a little tongue-in-cheek but you can start something cool with a funky, relevant title.

Looks like Layla took your advice and went with: “CEO (Chief Experience Officer)” 🙂

Please, don’t do this. It’s the epitome of corporate cringe.

The amount of business cards flicked my way with “President and CEO” written on when it’s a one man band…it just seems desperate.

I would put down the service I provide (for me, that’s Copywriter) or just Proprietor.

I am an Injury Management Advisor and started my own business. I have called myself a WorkCover Claims Consultant, which I am.
Once I have grown my business it will change.

Agree with the above. I void avoid cheeseball titles and go with something descriptive OR maybe “founder” depending on nature of business

Taking a few days to study tax, business, and contract law basics is time well spent for every entrepreneur. That may seem dull, but I found perusing the ATO website’s history and reading through borrowed law textbooks to be rather intriguing. Maybe I was meant to be a lawyer and I just didn’t get the memo.
