The Sydney Survivorship Centre is having a Benefit Concert in Strathfield Town Hall on 17th November 7.30 pm if you would like to come along or support it or by donation http://www.slhd.nsw.gov.au/events/CRGH-SSC
Ive been learning more about this little gym.
Some of you may have seen a TV report on the new building being done at Concord Repatriation Hospital, well this will be for our Diggers which as it should be. in the planning of this new building and the alteration of some others they have allowed space for the gym to be rehoused. The only thing is it is smaller than the one we have now, which cant cope with the recovering patients and survivors trying to come through the doors.
The existing gym can cope with 5 persons at a time. It really need at least 20 persons coming through the gym to just cope with those patients coming through Concord Hospital and that doesn’t include those bloke who have Prostate Cancer. .A small committee calling themselves Friends of the Survivorship Centre are about to take on the Government to try to have this problem addressed.
I have even suggested moving the gym off site but was told it needs to close to oncology so the patients can be monitored properly.
Now I can see why our help is desperately needed.
I hope soon to have an account that donations can be place at any time, but im dealing with Public Servants. There appears to be a chain of command that no one is game to sort cut. Are not we so lucky to be SOLOISTS

    Thanks Peter,

This is one of Sydneys Best kept secrets. I was talking to some people at our local Church this morning, haven’t been for a while so they wanted to know what I been up to, so I told them about the Gym. No one had heard of it evn the Physio that comes along. The more I mentioned the gym the more they wanted to know. The ministers wife was very impressed and took one of the fliers I have about the Benefit Concert.
Even the local Handyman wants to donate, so word is getting out.
Im developing a marketing plan and some editorial for the local newspapers.
Ill even go as far as approaching Channel 7 to try and get people behind it .
Sponsorship is what Im aiming for.
Theres and old saying that ” if you want something to Happen , YOU make it happen”. I wonder just how true that is .
Thank you all for your support, what ever you donate remember to take it off your tax, although this isn’t a Charity it is going 100% to research into Cancer and the affect of exercise has on Cancer . So far everything is looking Positive.

‘ PPS. Having being the primary support/care person and having spoken to a few over the time, the other thing overlooked in the whole cancer battle, is support for the support person, it is non existent, yet they are as vital a part of the process and recovery as specialist teams.’

Bert I have made some enquiries at the Cancer Clinic at Concord Hospital.
Through the Survivorship Centre, they encourage Carers to attend any of the courses open to patients, and should there be concern that is weighing them down then there is always a clinical psycologist on hand to help.

To day I did some relief cleaning for an old friend of mine.
The properties he has take over an hour just to walk around them.
One property has some 15 stairwells of three floors each, and another has 5.
All carpeted, except for 15 tiled entranceways.
The common areas get lots of leaves on them and each have a pool and a gymnasium.
Last time I cleaned them I could hardly get back to my car and drive home, this was last January.
Today however, I have pulled put really well, not that tired and sore, and Im going to do it again on Wednesday.
The only thing I can put this down to is the Gym.
Yes this little gym Ive been talking about.
Now if they can tailor exercises to help me get back on my feet think of what they can achieve for those that have or have had worse cancer than I have had.
I know your all going to help, when ever you can, it doesn’t have to be much even $ 10.00.
Also todayI have contacted the Institute of Managers and Leaders, of which I am a member, to see if they would like to join in with this small business comunity in supporting The Survivorship Centre.
    Ill keep you posted.

Gosh how time flies when your working.
Yes my stint helping out a friend with his cleaning has turned into working a couple of half days a week.

Also the latest update on the Survivorship Centre is that we are turning it into a Foundation, so that it can be managed.
At this point in time it has been run as a research centre, but to expand it needs to be able to attract donations from any one at any time, instead of relying on a Benefit Concert once a year( which was most enjoyable).
Hopefully I shall have the details where you will be able to donate to the Foundation..
This is just like starting a small business, and it will take a while to get the message out , and through the Friends Of the Sydney Survivorship Centre, we hope to using communities such as Facebook to help spread the word.
I am hoping many of you will help spread the word through your Facebook page as well.
Hopefully I will have that information for you in the next few days.

    Hey Burgo,
Nobody is going to let you retire anytime soon :)
Sounds like you’re as busy as always!
Good news on the foundation, that’s great progress. It definitely sounds like setting up a new business.
Let us know once you’re up and running and we’d be happy to share on Facebook etc…
    Nice work. Peter

https://www.slhd.nsw.gov.au/concord/donation.html scroll down to where it says please direct my donation to “Sydney Survivorship Centre”
This is the best I can do at this point.
We are working on a Logo that will have a link direct to the survivorship centre
but were dealing with Public Servants here and they don’t seem to think out side the square.
Ive also suggested a training facility to help Eps (Exercise Physiologists ) gain the knowledge to be able to help Cancer Survivors obtain the right exercises for them should their hospital not have a gym.
I have received a very enthusiastic response so im hoping we can set this up early in the new year.
Has anyone ever heard of ‘FOOTGOLF “
apparently we have a team of Aussie player heading over to Marocco to compete in the world Championship which starts on December 9th.
News to me but sounds interesting.
Yes and im still cleaning two half days a week.
Peter retirement is boring, I would much rather be working, doing something, now that weve done all the overseas trips we had planed. A few days in Kurnell is like a holiday to me.
    Ill keep you posted
