    Hey all!

I’m Karly and I’ve just opened a coworking space in Byron Bay, The Office Collective, for people just like us!

For the past 7 years I’ve been flying solo – running my voice over agency, Killer Kopy, from home. It had it’s blessings, like not having to work for someone else, but these were outweighed by the shortcomings – isolation, loneliness and constant distractions… my home started to feel like a bit of a prison. I spoke to many other who work from home and they all reported feeling the same way.

Whenever I imagined my ideal life I saw myself surrounded by other people. Working alongside them… but had no desire to have employees or go back to working for someone else.

So, I decided to explore ideas… and coworking popped up. Soon after I was signing a lease, filling the space with funky recycled furniture and we (my business partner, Cat and I) were opening the doors!

We offer a communal office environment, a boardroom (available for hire by the hour), kitchen and bathroom facilities, free fairtrade tea & coffee and wifi. But the most important thing we offer is a sense of community… that, and support!

Each day we check in at 11am to see where everyone is at and what they want to achieve by 3pm – when we check back in to see that everyone is on track. Plus we have the ‘Hour of Power’ – one hour each day free of distraction – no social media! We also host great fun events – like Pitch ‘n Pizza, Kick Arse Intensive, (focussed goal setting), Family Feast and a Round Table – where members can come together to share and collaborate.

Just wanted to share what we do… and ask a question:

What would you most value in an environment like ours?

    Hi Karly,

    Welcome to the forum.
I would go for the Pizza days and Byron beach lunches.

    A warm welcome, Karly!

I just love what you have done and after researching the Hub set up in Melbourne some time ago, I have in the back of my mind (oh dear, business no.3) to do the same in Brisbane. When I am next in Byron, I would love to drop in and meet yourself and Cat and find out more.

From such a space, I would value great coffee, sharing of ideas, interaction and a bit of fun.

Very best of luck with it!

    Thanks Steve and Nic.

Nic… we’d love to give you a tour. Next time you are around, feel free to drop in. If you decide to go down that track we are more than willing to share what we have learned along the way… and will help any way we can.

    Can I come play!? :D

    Sounds really fun.

I think I would value the support most. You know how you get those crazy, hair-brained ideas and you’re not sure if you’re on the right track or not? That :)

    Utopia!

Congratulations on finding a setup that really works!

My name’s Dan from a new startup coworking and innovation studio in Byron Bay called StartInno (opened late 2014). The studio has high speed internet access, collaborative spaces, desks, meeting space all above a great cafe in the Arts and Industry Park. In addition to coworking we also run 14 week Incubator and Accelerator programs to help businesses or ides grow and commercialise – more details on startinno.com

We also support the #StartupByron networking group which is a free, open and inclusive community that meets the first thursday of every month, typically at The Rails hotel. Have a look at facebook.com/startupbyron for more info.

We’re trialing a new booking system, have a look at

    Howdy Dan

    Hope you are well?

May want to jump across and check out the guidelines section posted at the top of the forum page and read over section 10: Posting Tips.

Only say this as this is well over a 24 month old post that you are refreshing :( which may not really be relevant today.

If your intent is to get people to review and look at the booking system, maybe just put it into the networking section or even under the community reviews section?

All the best and look forward to seeing you contribute, as it looks like you may know a fair bit to be honest…

    Cheers
    Jason

Small Business owners in Byron Bay are in large numbers so I hope they all love your space.

Get busy collaborating and perhaps organising a networking event to get all those fab owners together in your place.

Enjoy the FS forums – we are a hub of business owners here

    Hi Jason

Sure, totally understand. Unfortunately Karly shut down her coworking space (and also wrote a really great blog about it and failure) so StartInno is now currently the only coworking space in Byron Bay.

This thread is still heavily picked up by Google so thought important to update it.

More than happy to chat about the StartInno Studio if anyone has questions. Currently have around 25 members!

    Warm regards, Dan
