Back again, but I get good advice here so why not?
I am still in the process of SEO my website, trying to do as much as I can myself before forking out more $$$ for someone else to do it.
I know backlinks are important to google ranking. Whats the best way to create quality backlinks? So far I would only have a few, through pinterest and a few various forums (not sure if these count or not). I sign up to a “mummy” forum, introduce myself, talk about my kids then drop my website link as my work info, as most mothers are interested in working from home, plus have kids that love parties. I get a bit of traffic through that way, but not heaps. Do they count as backlinks? Worth the time to continue?
Does each separate pin I add on pinterest create a backlink? What are some other good ideas to create more backlinks? White hat only please….

January 6, 2016 at 9:41 am #1192682Up::0The backlinks will “count” if they are “follow” links, but if they’re “nofollow” then they won’t.
You can get some browser plugins like Moz toolbar which lets you highlight which links are followed and which aren’t so you can make good decisions that way. In the case of your mummy forum though you should probably continue to be active there because the networking will bring you customers over time if you do it right anyway regardless if the link counts or not.
I get a lot of work from clients on Flying Solo just because I get involved, try to be as helpful as I can and give people as much of my knowledge as possible. But I do it because I enjoy the community and it’s fun helping people. Getting customers from it is just a bonus I think.
Keep in mind that not all links are created equal. Links from forums, sites like pinterest etc aren’t going to be as powerful as a link from say a high quality blog or news outlet. As you can imagine the ones that are the most powerful are going to be the hardest to get.
So I wouldn’t say stop doing the other stuff, but getting quality backlinks is just about the hardest part of doing off-site seo which is why most sensible people just outsource it.
I can recommend an seo company that I’ve used for years with great results if you ever decide to pass it on to professionals…
January 7, 2016 at 2:54 am #1192683Up::0I would love to outsource it, but budget restrictions really limit that!
I would love the recommendation for your SEO company, as an option at least.
From further reading, I do think forum links will be nofollow, but I ‘think’ pinterest links will count….
Learning curve very steep atm. Its enough to give an instant head ache haha.January 7, 2016 at 9:20 am #1192684Up::0If you want to learn about SEO for a small investment I’d definitely recommed you checking out SEOPoint. John Romaine, a regular at Flying Solo, has just launched his online SEO training and he knows what he’s talking about. There is a forum completely focused on this kind of stuff.
My 10 cents however.
Sign yourself up to SourceBottle.com and start responding to call outs on people asking for response for businesses like yours. Often they’re seeking bloggers or request for response but it’s definitely been a great way of getting quality links.
The other approach to finding great links is to reverse engineer your competition. Sounds scary, I know, but if you use tools like Ahrefs.com or Moz you can basically plug in one of your competitors, or many of them, and export the back links to a spreadsheet for you to work through and see if you can replicate their best ones.
That’s your best bet. Link building is a big area of debate around here so you’re likely to get very different views of opinion but as long as you focus on quality over quantity you can make a significant impact.

- Start with business citations. List yourself in as many credible business directories as possible. (Yelp, Yellow pages, True Local, Hot Frog etc)
- Setup your social profiles (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Youtube etc)
- Utilize search query operators to find niche specific directories (eg keyword + directory, keyword + directory + add/submit/suggest/post, keyword + intitle:”directory”, keyword+ inurl:”directory”) Infact you can find an enormous amount of link building opportunites using search query operators
- Reverse engineer your competitors. Identify and replicate as many of their GOOD quality links as possible
- Content marketing – start publishing 10x content – syndicate your content across social media, repurpose your content to further extend your reach. The best links are natural EARNED links.
- Perform outreach. Get in touch with the big names in your space. Ask to contribute. Tell them about your content/products/service offerings.
If you’re restricted by budget then I would encourage you to consider my training (as mentioned above by Bryon) Details are in my signature.
Good luck.
