Hi
Just a little question, one i think may have adverse effects that i may not have considered and was hoping you guys/gals could shed your experience or thoughts on the subject – i feel i may not understand completely the implications, if any, of SEO and just general confusion for potential clients..
Scenario:
We, meaning i, have set up a seperate business selling something i have been involved in for years and have a passion for which is run on a WooCommerce platform on the .com.au although of late there is now a sub product (all lines are basically never ending including existing line) that i fee would benefit from a completely seperate web presence…Although its all in the same field and people would potentially expect them together, if i separated them out and maintained one site on Woo and maybe set up a Shopify for the second under the .com of the same URL am i exposing myself to any hidden issues in both the SEO and customer confusion areas?
Both markets will predominately be Australian (although need to be equipped/geared for US) and one of the other reasons i was considering Shopify for the second is that we have a shop frontish now that needs POS which shopify have and seems easy to use (yeah costs a bit though)…
Or, should i just concentrate on the one URL (.com.au) and push all my effort into this one and bundle ALL products here?
Advantages on one site:
– Dedicate my time in one area
– traffic or cross over traffic may occur
– stronger presence
– existing site allows better shipping module (i feel) to tailor to unique productsSecond site:
– unique location for this one specific product (although heaps in it) in one location – look specialised
– shipping is ‘simpler’ although i can then offer one price fixed for all Aussie Orders which will not get confused with all my other product lines confused on first site (rates vary significantly on the main site at moment)
– can create targeted blog for this community to ‘inform’ more specifically
– option of POS is thereAm i overlooking something? Or should i just be considering a completely new URL to seperate it?

Hi Jason go for one site and put all your effort into its success. Simple is good. Too many times I have seen companies create multiple presences only to ultimately go back to just one. But in the intervening period they lost focus and potential business.
Unless it will be two different businesses then stick to “simple” and one site.

Thanks JohnAppreciate the reply, not sure if you could tell by the ‘tone’ of the OP although it’s been on my mind for a week or 2 and just the decision is causing me to be distracted

for example if I wanted to buy your marmalade jam which is on .com.au, but just put in the .com, and found you were only selling gingerbread snaps there, I would go looking somewhere else just assuming you had stopped selling my favourite marmalade jam..
Footnote, I don’t like either so I would never be your client

It’s a good question Jason because I’m looking at dong something similar soon. The main reason I’m looking to keep the 2 sites separate is that the products are all drop-shipped but items from store # 1 will come from supplier A and items from store # 2 will be from supplier B. So separating it out makes the freight and management of it easier. I also like the fact that both sites will be speciality sites. In my case the products are somewhat related but are not particularly similar and therefore you would not generally buy them together anyway.However, like you I have been wondering if there are many pitfalls to separating the sites. I guess it makes management of the sites/stores potentially more onerous.

My suggestion (NOT an SEO Guru – just a business person)
Have one store for all your products, which make it easy to manage, backup, contact request etc (trust me I have been there)
THEN, Get your .com domain and create a single marketing landing page for your unique product (easy to manage), with all the information and a call to action, but your customers then get directed to your store for buying from the ‘Buy Now” button. (Make sure that button takes them to the specific product page for buying).
This gives you the opportunity of having unique content for the stand alone product and allows you to market it separately, without having to manage and pay for a full store.
Many many people do this with eBook they have written.
Just food for thought.
