Don’t laugh at me but I am fairly new to setting up a website etc. I have a few (probably stupid) questions.
I am in the process of registering a domain and was wondering what the smartest thing to do is and if I understand the procedure.
1. I register a domain.
2. I need a host.
3. I need a website.to 1.: Does it make a difference where I register it with? Are there any good or bad providers? One very popular seems to be crazydomains. Has anyone any experience with these guys? Or any suggestions where to by my domain?
to 2. : I have read somewhere in the forum that the https://serversaurus.com.au/index.php guys shall be very good and fast. However, for the next two months I do not need a business package. All I need is being able to set up a “under construction page” and be able to set up an email under my domain name. Any ideas what the best (most cost effective way) forward is?
to 3.: I am planning to purchase a wordpress theme and use wordpress to publish my website. Is there a “better” way?
Many thanks

Yes you got the process correct, domain, hosting account and website. The most critical part for you is the hosting provider, a good one will provider support over the phone.
1 – No it doesn’t really make a difference for the BIG registrars of a domain, other than price, but I recommend you stick with the big ones, (crazydomains, GoDaddy etc) Avoid the high priced ones like MelbourneIT. ALSO, make sure they don’t try and charge extra for DNS Management (I know GoDaddy does NOT charge extra – but some do) DNS Management is how you point your domain name to your hosting provider.
2 – I have used many different hosting providers for myself, family and friends (23 sites in total), the best provider hands down provider is Panthur (https://www.panthur.com.au) they have phone support 24/7 and the guys are fantastic, amazing, incredible etc. Make sure your hosting has one click installs of WordPress (nearly all of them do) You can start with the Panthur $5 a month hosting and upgrade as your need it and they are Aust based and fast. (I am NOT affiliated with Panthur, just a very happy happy customer)
3 – I use WordPress as well on about 16 sites, simply get on ThemeForrest (https://themeforest.net/) and buy a theme you like. If you are doing the work yourself make sure the theme uses Visual Composer so you can set up your site.
MY opinion for best beginners WordPress Theme:
For an alternative you could use Divi WordPress Theme by https://www.elegantthemes.com/gallery/divi/.
This theme has it’s own builder so you have less plugins to worry about updating and it’s super easy and they have awesome security on the theme – Sucuri certified, I am using it for about 5 friend’s sites, and they have zero experience on WordPress, but they can use this theme,
Hope all this helps
Cheers

BenNovember 15, 2016 at 11:21 am #1203257Up::0Just reseach some registrars. Might not be a biggy now, but as your business grow and people start complaining or spam issues. Some of the big registrars can be a bit quick to block/ban your domain without giving you fair go to explain… not talked about enough i think, just do some research i think.
Imagine your business make decent money, then one morning you woke up and it’s gone? Something to think about.Stay Awesome!
SimonJanuary 23, 2022 at 6:19 pm #1233889Up::0How do you choose the best web hosting for your website? Can you please help me here? Thanks for your time.
April 3, 2022 at 9:12 pm #1235630Up::1If I had to pick an Australian provider for hosting and .au based domains, its probably VentraIP. For non-Australian targeted websites, you can go with dozens of options. I’ve used Namecheap and Godaddy primarily.
Hosting – I like Digital Ocean. Its very versatile and again if your targeting Australia for example, you can specifically select Australian based servers located mostly in Sydney and Melbourne to achieve better speeds than hosting in the U.S. You can get quite specific with server spec and pay only for what you need.
Websites. Everyone talks about WordPress and its great, but it can require a significant number of plugins from a multitude of third parties depending on the functionality required. I like Duda and use it, but the template library is nothing compared to whats out there with WordPress. Ultimately its really about how custom a design needs to be.
