Has anyone used a facebook group as a way of getting known?

My biggest problem is – there are no “legal networking” sites or forums. I’ve been looking for years, but it comes down to business/professional sites, and as such i’m all over the place trying to get myself out there.

There are quite alot of “local” lawyer groups on facebook i’ve noticed.

    What are your thoughts?

I’ve pondered this question myself a bit. Joining groups on facebook (and other sites) that are within your business area are worthwhile for the networking aspect. But it’s a bit like a jigsaw puzzle when you open the box – all the pieces are there, but none of them are connected and I find I’m asking myself, am I in the right group, is there a bigger/better group that I’m missing out on (and are missing out on me!).

There is a golden opportunity in your message – If there are no sites/forums for legal professionals…start one! Become the ‘go to’ place for legal professionals, just like FlyingSolo is for soloists. :)

    Hi Helen

    Thanks for your reply!

I have thought about doing that EXACT same thing as you mentioned – beginning a legal professionals forum, or a business/legal forum for quite some time. I suppose there is a little self doubt in this regard – as I am not yet qualified as a practitioner.

The other thing would be – who/how to set up a forum? I am thinking of buying a domain name for last minute legal – perhaps i could wrap the two together? The only other type of forum is one for the community to ask legal questions to any law profesionals that are on the site.

Perhaps it’s just a quesiton of how successful it would be – and that’s just a matter of trying.

That’s exactly right – but if you’re looking for it, chances are others are too. I’d grab that domain name now anyway if I were you – there are plenty of threads on these forums on why that is a good idea so I’ll leave you to read them – even if you only park it and set up an email hosting plan.

There is a website that is US based which has the same kind of set-up of having the ability to ask questions over the web of an expert (in this case it’s a medical site), I wish I could remember the name of it, then I’d share the link. I can’t see why it wouldn’t work for legal as well though is my point.

You could still set it up now even if you aren’t qualified to practice yet, again, I’m sure there are plenty of law students in the same boat looking for a community. Allow for both areas (qualified and not) and they have a reason to hang around as they move up to being fully qualified.

As for setting up the site, I’ve found some great templates through http://www.templatemonster.com, you can search for forum site templates, legal themed etc, and they start as low as $36 USD. Then you find a nice web designer/programmer who’ll help you set it up. There’s plenty on the FS forums I’m sure :) (not me, I’m purely print design).

    Piece of cake :-)

Thanks so much Helen. I am so pumped to start it – it certainly would be another good way to promote Last Minute Legal as well! I will have to have a look into forum hosting and ways to promote etc through flyingsolo and go from there.

Thanks so much for your help and support! Perhaps it’s not such a silly idea after all :)

    Hi ‘Last minute legal’
I may be able to provide what you are looking for in one sweep.
I am heavily involved with the development of a brand new invitation only social networking site called 434U.
However apart from the normal personal social networking stuff every member has the ability to set up a business profile, create their own business website complete with forum, events, blogs etc and get listed in our business directory. Within our business community you can also create specific subgroups eg on legal matters.
We already have a high profile Barrister and Legal Advisor amongst our key founders. And it is completely FREE (even better every member shares in the revenue we make!)
Just drop me a PM if you are interested, want more information or want an invite.

    Rgds, Sef

    Facebook groups are great.

We have built a strategy around a total (so far) Nine fan pages. In total we have a pool of 80,000 people whom we can direct to our own fan page, or website. It is really starting to heat up and we have only been at it for just over one month.

I did a search on Linked-in for ‘legal’ and lots of networking groups came up. I belong to various Linked in http://www.linkedin.com groups myself and find it helpful to bat ideas and learn from others. I use Linked In for business and Facebook for family stuff.

I agree with Karen and use Facebook and LinkedIn for the same reasons (personal and business respectively) – LinkedIn has lots of professionals (legal and otherwise) and relevant groups. However like face-to-face networking it is only what you make it – although you don’t have to go out (or even look professional!) you probably have to work harder to make your presence noticed (ie post & respond).

I think to develop your own site is a big commitment – why not use what is already there? However, whatever you decide, I wish you all the best…..

Why not talk nicely to the Flying Solo Team and have a LEGAL EAGLES room which may encourage other Legals to land on this nesting site. Not only would/could it be handy for our members but it could also attract international legals as well.
Flying solo is becoming known overseas as well as here in Australia and Im certain that any free simple legal advice would be helpful to our fledgling soloists. Not only would they be helped but who will they turn to when they need something more pressing, someone they know and trust, instead of someone unknown.

This would have to one of the BEST if not THE BEST networking site. Why go anywhere else?

Facebook groups is one of the best ways to develop your database and build relationships. Stay within the rules, start the process and watch your group grow.

    Hello,

From my point of view Face-book allows different networks and groups to which many users can join. It also allows privacy settings on basis of networks. Groups are used for discussions and events etc. Groups are a way of enabling a number of people to come together online to share information and discuss specific subjects. They are increasingly used by clubs, companies and public sector organizations to engage with stakeholders – be they members of the public, employees, members, service users, shareholders or customers. A group is comprised of but not limited to the following: the members who have joined, recent news contents, discussion board contents, wall contents, photos, posted items, videos and all associated comments of such items. In this respect, groups are similar to pages but contain more features.

    Thanks

Linkedin definitely a good place to go to find others you can connect with and network with.

If you want to start up your own forum why not investigate ning.com? You can get your own domain if you want and use it with that. Ning has everything already set up to create discussion forums, users profiles and pages, separate groups for things. I use it for a number of groups I own/moderate. Yahoogroups is another way to set up your own group. I’m sure it wouldn’t take long for others to find you – if you’ve been looking then others will have been too.
