    Good morning Wolven,

There is a stack of web designers here in the forum Im sure you wont have any trouble finding one.
I only have direct experience with one of them, I asked him last week to make a site for me that Im really happy with – the prototype can be found here

he’s been good to deal with and understood what I wanted.

I believe this one is built on vbulletin so perhaps it would be a good idea to go to that site and see what’s involved in setting it up? You’ll probably find they have a lot of skins and plugins to add on to the main program and you can build up from there. Having someone who understands web design would then be helpful too.

I’m currently setting up a new one for my own industry built with smf (simplemachines.org) and have been doing all the editing myself by visiting their support forum and reading up and asking questions on how things work.

    Thanks Wolven,
Glad you like it. The design of Flying Solo has organically grown over the years and so is essentially custom designed – the original designers are no longer designing websites in any case so not much direct help there! Kathie is right, the forum section runs on vBulletin, which has been integrated into the broader website/articles/directory. If you’re interested, take a look at https://www.vbulletin.com/, the basic forum software can be customised to your own look.
Otherwise there a loads of great website gurus on the forum here who will be able to help with more specific advice.
    Cheers
    Peter

There are lots of different options available for creating an online forum, i would recommend that your friend first lists what he expects in an online forum i.e purpose of the forum, will it be subscription based, will it need to be integrated into an existing website etc.. and then look at the options available. There are lots of different forum software out there, some forum software are quite easy to implement and don’t require much customization, others are not so easy and take some knowledge to get working.

At the end of the day you want one that is easy to use and is easy to integrate but will also meet future needs.

In some cases depending on the purpose of the forum it maybe better to build a custom solution rather than trying to modify an off the shelf solution, this depends on what you are long term trying to achieve and is just another option available.

If you would like any further assistance I’d be happy to assist.

    Ben
