Does anyone have a list of free directories that they can share?
Or any tips on organic SEO?

I wrote an article on link building which includes quite a few Australian free directories.

A link is in my signature.

    That’s a great list!

We’ve used listings in the free directories a lot and it seems to work for us with traffic and we’re on the front page of google organically for selected keywords with this as part of our strategy.

In terms of SEO, for us, we’ve written up the submissions carefully beforehand and included the main keyword phases we’ve been targetting and kept it as tight as possible. (yes, obvious but it’s surprising that this is neglected sometimes) Also be sure to match up your keyword phases from the links to the landing pages.

Also keep in mind that the directories are managed by humans and read by humans so keep them in mind with your writing and behaviour.

With some specialist directories you might want to have the link going to a specific area within your site rather than just the home page.

We track our directory listings efforts in an excel spreedsheet so we know where we are when working through the list.

We published a story on backlinking etc that you might find useful at http://www.sheinspires.com.au/marketing/back-linking-strategy-tips

    All the best with it.

    Cheers,
    Belinda

Thanks NetOrigin for the wonderful list. I like you idea SheInspires of keeping a spreadsheet, one thing that we often forget to do is to track and measure the effectiveness of our efforts.

    Hi Paul,
I believe I can save you a lot of time.

Requesting links from the Directories suggested here are likely to be a completely wasted effort.

Your site has so many other SEO problems that I believe links from these unimportant and irrelevant directories will have no significant impact on you SE referrals.

    I hope I’m wrong.

I’m sorry to say that I agree mostly just wasting time… but if you want to get links for the sake of numbers go for it….

    Fantastic resource NetOrigin!

For anyone else looking through this post and submitting to the sites above this website appears to be down at the moment.

And there was one other one which the website was broken but cannot remember right now

    Hi,
Neither Google nor Bing have indexed a single page from this domain.

That suggests either the URL is wrong or it has been kicked out of the SEs.

People should check out the sites before they use them. Some could be a waste of your time, others could hurt you.

I often wonder if these submissions do you any good or not…can anyone answer that?

I am beginning to wonder if these free directories are there just to onsell your details for others to market to you. I have listed my website on plenty of them and see I get clicks from some of them, but not that many considering how many I am listed on. A few like hot frog and true local appear on page one for us but the rest you will only find us through their website listings if you actually visit the site and search their directory.

Its such a lot of work to gradually get on all of these directories…I would love to hear other experts opinions in the value of doing this, we are already position 1 or 2 page 1 Google and I don’t know if these links have actually helped to get there or not. It would be good to find this out and to share this with others.

Most directories give little link juice… unless it is from the very corrupt dmoz or expensive yahoo dir.

Its okay to use directories but make sure you have lots of links from other sources too.

If you want I can get your site submitted to about 1000 directories for $50…
