Get in touch with competition?

Good afternoon all,

One of the question I have been asking myself for a little while is “Should I get in touch with my competitors”.

I own the patent for my products and there is always that fear that someone will come and steal the idea!

In you opinion, is it a good thing to make contact with competition?

I would ask the question why, is there any real benefit, or are you just putting another layer of complexity that you don’t need.

Having said that I am in contact with a lot of my competitors via another forum, but that’s not really the same I think.

But I do keep in touch with 2 or 3, but mainly as I have run into them on other jobs, and built up a relationship, and in my case it is handy as I can feed some of my excess work to them, knowing the jobs are going to reliable people. But otherwise there are dozens running around the area, I wave to them, but never stop and see how business is going or anything like that.

I think it’s just good networking to add as many people to your network as possible. It’s always good to “talk shop” with people who get what you do because they do what you do. I personally think (at least in my area of expertise) there’s greater cooperation than dog-eat-dog competition out there.
