Hi all,
I have to manage a large video production project for a govt organisation with many departments. There will be two, possibly three videos and even perhaps a website. We don’t have to produce the video…all I am doing is determining what is wanted/needed and then the possible cost of producing each one and then trying to get the funding.
I have to go to each department – some out of area, define what each wants in the video, work out what money would be required and then how we are going to fund it using various related sources.
I need a good software package that runs on a mac to collect and collate all of the data and then handle the planning of the video/s using the acquired data. The completed data would define what is needed. Once the approved production is signed off on, then it is off to find tenders for the approved project.
Has anyone got any suggestions?
Thank you in advance.

June 12, 2011 at 11:46 pm #1063643Up::0Hi MediaMan,
You could try some of the products from the Omni Group. http://www.omnigroup.com/products/
I use OmniGraffle to design the structure of my websites etc. But some of their other products look like they could be more suited to your needs. Possibly OmniOutliner ?
They should at least give you a good visual element to the planning.
Download the free trial first to see if you like it!
Good luck!
June 18, 2011 at 5:22 am #1063644Up::0Apart from getting relevant information out of my colleagues at this job, I think finding the right software for this task has been the most frustrating part!!
It would be great to have software where you could dump all the info I get off those I interview about their needs, collate and organise it all and then make a report up out of it all in the end, so I can present that report to the people who get the money for the project. I other words, make complete sense of a whole lot of information as to receive funding for the project.
Perhaps I am asking a bit much, but I am still looking.
The issue is, of course, you start using one software package, find a new one that *could* be more suitable and then have to transfer all the information into the new one to see if it actually “works” for your requirements.
Phooey!
I really do want to get this whole process and system right and streamlined, because I see me doing quite a bit of this “consulting” work from now on. I love it!

Thanks for the update, and good luck finding that software. I’ll be interested to learn what you decide to go with, because I imagine it could be useful for me too.
All the best,

1. Omniplan
2. Merlin
3. TimeCache
4. OmniOutlinerQuote:The issue is, of course, you start using one software package, find a new one that *could* be more suitable and then have to transfer all the information into the new one to see if it actually “works” for your requirements.I think it’s better for you to look at this blog for a comparison table of the various project management software alternatives. Check their features and select those that you prefer. You can then try the trial versions (most of them have) of those you have selected and see if it really “works” for your requirements.

Looks like you have a few applications to review for the Mac project management and mind-mapping tools. You might also want to consider Merlin in the list as well.
Your other note about collaborating with clients and dumping results of interviews over time could be solved with online tools such as:
- Basecamp
- Apollo
- Salesforce Chatter (perhaps)
June 29, 2011 at 2:55 am #1063648Up::0I am so completely going to have to look at this thread at home where blogs aren’t blocked.
I’ve never heard of the tools mentioned in this thread, and my current job title is “Master Project Scheduler”. Ridiculous, I know, but the extra $$$ that come with a guru job title help give my partner support to grow his solo business.
Of course, I’m not working in an Mac environment, but I was just having a discussion with a colleague about mindmapping software and project management software that would run on an iPad.
Two mentions in half an hour has to be more than a coincidence. Maybe I’m meant to migrate to Mac World.

Hi Kathy,
You might find that this sudden onslaught of software which is mac compatible is actually accessed online so most of the time it does not matter if you are using a mac, pc or a mobile platform such as an iPad.
If you are looking for project management rather then mind mapping software, which is actually quite different be sure to check out PROJECTminder
July 12, 2011 at 2:49 am #1063650July 19, 2011 at 3:15 am #1063651Up::0Merlin and Omniplan are on top of the list. They are the top project management software packages that run on Mac.
We use Latitude as our project management software package to manage our projects, documents and clients. It helps us generate reports quickly and create invoices of job costs.
July 27, 2011 at 7:30 am #1063652Up::0Ive never really found a Mac based PM software package to match MS Project sadly. i will check out some of teh ones mentioned in this thread that I havent seen before though.
I do use Mindnode Pro on the Mac for mindmapping and brainstorming. I used the free version for some time before deciding id splash out and get the paid for version. i have found it invaluable.
I had a great idea for an iphone/ipad project management app, but have the programming skills of Ted Bullpitt! Its on my todo list (hire a programmer etc).
