Hi everyone, Karen is my name and I would like to introduce you to my business McNally Travel.

I am a pilot by trade and have hung up the flying boots for the time being while I savour the time being a mum to my two young boys (3 years and 1.5 years old) and enjoy my travel agency business that I run solo from home.

To avoid getting rusty I keep my hand in with the flying when I can although it is quite demanding keeping on top of all the aviation rules and regulations with so much other stuff going on.

I love my business! I love travel! I specialise in travel to Canada and have my own global distribution system (GDS) installed at home so I can book flights direct with the airlines, and have a great network of suppliers for accommodation, tours, cruise packages, rental cars anywhere in the world.

So if anyone is looking for personalised attention for their travel needs give me a shout and mention you saw me on here.

    All the best everyone… :)

    Karen

Thanks for the intro Karen :)

Your set up sounds awesome. Although I think if I had access to all that flight info at home, I’d spend more time daydreaming about holidays than getting any work done!

You’re obviously much more disciplined than me!

    Welcome to Flying Solo,
    Jayne

    Hi Karen and welcome

A pilot – how exciting, I am sure you will be back in the air in no time. Creating wonderful holiday experiences for people must also be a great amount of fun too.

Thank you for the welcome Jayne and Kelly.

I have been known to have the odd sneaky peak at flights for myself Jayne :) The bonus for me is my business is mobile too so I can pack it up, take it with me and work remotely.

Flying has been a rewarding career for me Kelly – funny though how our focus can change after having children! I’ve been extremely lucky to have travelled quite a bit over the years, for business and pleasure, and with kids, so I do enjoy using that experience to help others make the most of their travels.

    Hi Karen,

Welcome to FS. Wow that is seriously cool being a pilot. How long have you been a pilot for?? What made you decide to do it and how long did it take you to become a pilot??

Sorry for all the questions, i am just totally intrigued by your profession. Well i am sure you will find out many things here on FS, lots of lovely, smart people around here to pick the brains of.

Hi Karen, and welcome to FS. I’m sure you’ll find this a wonderful community to be involved with. As a newbie, I’ve found it invaluable, and the forum is my favourite place on the site.

I have been slack at posting of late as I’ve been beavering away on my website, which is almost done. I’ll be inflicting it on the FS community and hoping for some reviews in a week or two.

Meantime, I have bookmarked your site and will message you about a trip my brother and I are planning for either this or next year, and which will include Canada. You sound like just the person to give us the info we need to make the most of our trip. Do you cover Alaska as well?

Best wishes with your business Karen. I hope to be a customer of yours :)

    Hi Kimt,

Flying is fun. I was ground crew for a few years watching everyone else takeoff and being left behind in their Jet-A1 fumes. That paved the way to me saving the money, studying and training for a pilot licence. I have been flying for just over 15 years.

It doesn’t take long to get a licence if you have the money and time to concentrate on it, and can pass the exams and meet the training syllabus. The hardest part is going out after you have a fresh licence and building your hours so that you become employable. I was lucky to go chase cows for a little time up in the Northern Territory and had a few other odd ferry jobs with an aerial survey company in the early days.

Thanks for your reply. There definitely is a lot of useful info around here and a lot of great people.

    Hi Lee,

Thank you for your welcome message. I think as soloists we are all guilty of wandering off and burying ourself in our business from time to time. I have been a member of FS for almost a year and been so busy building the business it is only now that I find the time to introduce myself.

Alaska is a great destination. Absolutely! Get in touch when you are ready to make some plans and we’ll get cracking on putting together a great trip for you and your brother.

Can’t wait to see your new website. All the best there, I know what a big task it is!

Aren’t we though Karen! I had no idea what I was in for when I thought “wouldn’t it be good to …” :) But it’s been a great experience and I’m really enjoying what I have been building. FS has been a fantastic resource and I’ve recommended it to lots of others I’ve come across who have built or are building businesses.

I’ve pm’d you about our planned trip and am delighted to hear you might be able to help with the Alaska leg too. I specifically haven’t gone to see an agent because our plans are so vague as yet and becaue we managed a two month stint last year in the UK, Norway and the arctic without outside assistance, but when I saw your post I thought, why not?

Another example of FS being the bridge between businesses and clients. It’s so much easier to make contact with someone when you’ve got that personal contact through the forum. It’s not the first time I’ve chosen a service provider because they were an FS member and I love the idea of supporting fellow-soloists :)

    You’re a good egg Lee :)

My solo journey started here on the forum where I found the wonderful graphic design services of Jen Clark – Jen Clark Designs. She helped create and bring my logo to life… and the rest they say is history – ha ha.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to help you make the most of your time in North America Lee. I get very excited about planning travels to that part of the world as it has been my old stomping ground (which I still travel and explore quite frequently). I just love what a unique place it is and how much it has to offer for all types of travellers. Sometimes more than people know – unless they find someone to ask. Someone like me :D

Ahhh, I will be looking for someone to design a logo at some stage, I’ll be sure to check out Jen’s site, thanks for the recommendation Karen.

And I’m very glad to have found you to ask about our planned trip, someone who knows the place and isn’t just browsing websites as I thought a local travel agent might be doing. And to be fair, with vague plans it’s hard to know what to ask about. Someone who knows the place well is just what I need.

Looking forward to hearing from you after Easter.

Hope the bunny is generous :)

    Hi there Jeremy,

Thanks very much for the feedback on my website. I worked with some great people who helped me get it exactly as I had imagined.

I burnt the midnight oil on many occasion to put together the content and it was a great sense of achievement when it finally went live.

The travel trade fluctuates and updates frequently so it keeps me busy reflecting that on the website, and in doing so is a good tool for keeping my head fresh with what’s going on in the industry at the same time.

I look forward to helping you plan your future travels Jeremy :)
