I find myself in need of help and advice. The CPA that I engaged back in September to lodge my 2016 tax return has not done so. Found the guy on a ‘bid for work’ site, which I am regretting. I am unable to complete and lodge the tax return myself (attempted through MyGov) because I’m declaring income earned through my side business as a Graphic Designer. This is the hurdle that I’m facing — eTax won’t let me proceed to estimate & lodge because of Errors in the Business/sole trader, partnership and trust income (including loss details) section.

Numerous follow ups with my current accountant has led to nothing. I know I’m way overdue to lodge as an individual, and I understand that a tax agent can lodge my return as late as 15 May 2017 (at least, that’s what I’m understanding from reading the ATO website). However, my accountant said that he would get to it about a month ago and this did not happen. What can I do now? Can anyone here recommend an accountant that deals with Individual & Sole Trader tax returns who is transparent and reliable?

Next year I would like to grow my Creative Services business (in addition to my full time employment) so having a great accountant in my camp is very important.

    Regards,
    Natasha

PS. If it helps, I’m located principally in Westall (Clayton South) Mon-Fri during business hours, and South Yarra all other times.

“Bid to work” and “quality advice” are often mutually exclusive. There are several professional accountants on this forum (including our firm based in Camberwell Vic). You can search the directory, take referrals from this thread or call us anytime from Tuesday next week.

Sole trader returns are pretty simple for most good accountants. If your business had a loss the errors may relate to the non commercial loss reporting items.

    Cheers
    Alex

Thanks, Alex. I’m learning lessons the hard way. I’ve looked up your firm, and will be in touch.

I used a company called QuickTax, but they did not email me when there were errors at MyGov, so I discovered it 2 months later when logging in. Is this kind of thing normal practice? I have to fix my own return but still pay?

Just see an accountant in person and they will solve your issues for you.
