I’m interested to hear more about how Flying Solo’ers will be marketing their business online in 2016. I’m hoping that some may have the time to respond to a few questions below.
Some questions I’d like answered:
- What are your pain points with online marketing? i.e. Traffic, leads, interaction, brand awareness, budgets, content, trust etc?
- Which marketing platforms do you feel can drive positive impact? i.e. google, facebook, twitter etc.
- Are you considering paid platforms, if so which ones? i.e. AdWords, Facebook Advertising, Twitter etc.
- Will you be outsourcing any part of your online marketing in 2016? i.e. social, seo, adwords, content.
- If yes to the above, are you looking for services (DFY), mentoring or online training / workshops (DIY)?
- Did any platform, product, service or training course significantly help you in 2015 and if so what was it?
- What other tools have you been using to market your business online? i.e. Flying solo, guest blogging, podcasting, SourceBottle etc.
Feel free to add additional insight.

A variation on the theme.
2016 will be the year of transparency for online marketers where savvy businesses will provide evidence based information to prove ROI.
If 2015 was a year in which marketers shared their techniques freely through giving away e-books, podcasts and even courses in return for e-mail opt-ins, 2016 will be the year where actual results are shared.

January 11, 2016 at 9:50 pm #1192626Up::0Hey Byron
We’ve always relied heavily on blogging to market our business (Swish Design) but in 2016 we will be looking more closely at using Facebook Ads to drive targeted traffic to our site and we’re also looking at podcasting (but that will be dependent on finding a real point of difference first. So many businesses podcasts out there.)January 11, 2016 at 11:05 pm #1192627Up::0I love your comments Paul hopefully it does come true and that the “results” are honest. I’m trending this way for my own business and am always looking for examples of how I can showcase results and proof. I think it’s important for all businesses but especially digital marketing fields where proof can be manipulated or hidden.
@Kelly – I love content I think it’s the backbone for any strategy but I think what you mentioned is critical “finding a real point of difference”. I listened to a podcast for Robert Gerrish and i think he nailed the “audience” part for Flying Solo. Would you say your content been successful so far? Do you have an audience already? I’ve typically found that blogging can work exceptionally well or will have next to no impact (especially short term) depending on the industry and level of competition.
Facebook advertising using remarketing is certainly something that can compliment your content marketing in my opinion.
January 12, 2016 at 7:29 am #1192628Up::0Our content on the Swish Design blog? It’s helped a huge amount from an SEO point of view – but I’ve not pushed it as hard as I should from a connection and list building point of view. That’s the goal for this year! Oh and yes, have tried a little Facebook remarketing recently with some good results.
The thing with content, any content, is that it’s really about connection above all else. So the hardest thing is figuring out who you really want to connect with through your content, and then decide how you’re going to address the pain points of those folk. Has been a bit of a moving feast for Swish in recent years (and we’re just about to launch a re-brand so it will change again.)
And funnily, for Flying Solo, we’re about to do a little pivot too! So Robert’s podcast is about to do a little change as well.
January 12, 2016 at 8:15 am #1192629Up::0I have wondered about remarketing and I need to get myself around it.
What are the costs vs direct ad campaigns on FB and Adwords (generally)?
January 12, 2016 at 10:41 am #1192630Up::0As a very very new startup, we’ll be using Linkedin as the main social media platform. Website of course to do what websites should do. We don’t think our market will be on Facebook but we’ll have a presence there along with Twitter and Instragram. Being a business built around imagery, we feel it’s important to have a presence on the visual platforms such as Tumblr, Instragram and G+. We do have some work to do on these areas but that’s the plan.
January 14, 2016 at 11:43 am #1192631Up::0@Paul remarketing costs depend significantly on how many visitors your website is getting and how big your custom audience size is. Once you have your audience size then honestly you could probably get away with a $10 budget per day and probably not even get through that each day. I think i’m looking at 2- 4.40 per click at the moment. Much cheaper than AdWords although I’m still testing whether conversions are better or worse.
@shane Thanks for the insight. What sort of content do you think you’ll be doing for LinkedIn to attract your audience? Are you interested in Pulse, status updates, paid or something else? Keen to hear your thoughts.
January 17, 2016 at 5:54 am #1192632Up::0Linkedin will be one way of making our market aware of what we do. As a place for business, Linkedin will be one way for us to build the relationships we need. Case studies, product overviews, collaboration opportunities will appear here but always with the aim of driving people to our website. We don’t control Linkedin we do control our web presence so using our website as a key element in our business is important to us.
January 18, 2016 at 6:11 am #1192633Up::0I’m doing a lot of remarketing and it’s working really well – so cost effective, but that said I do get a lot of traffic to my sites and that was built using SEO.
I’m focusing on Vlogging a little more this year, as well as building my email list.
And of course I’ll still do all the usual social media bits – because I’m a total social media addict!
