Hi Everyone,
NOTE: I am not selling space or renting space and this is not a serviced office I am a genuine small business looking to share my office for free.
I am a small business owner with a large office in Bowen Hills, the office is way to big for just myself and my 2 staff, and I wanted to see how I can go about getting another small business or start up to share with me (I am not planning on charging rent), I just want to have more people around to make the office feel more vibrant.
The office really feels vacant with just the 3 of us, I rent out some of my car parks, so I am making money from that, and the rent is very very reasonable, so I was not wanting to rent out the space, just offer it up to another small business.
My question is, where should I put the notice, I have tried Gumtree, and there were so many weird calls, I am looking for a genuine small business owner, who is either just starting up or needing a break from working at home.
Can anyone give suggestion on where I can put up a notice for this space, or even if a charity is needing free space.
Thanks in advance.

Although i have no need for, although would love to, the office itself being in Melbourne i just wanted to say how refreshing this post is. An offer for a start up, or new business owner to acquire rent free space for the mutual benefit of ‘filling’ the office space…
Awesome.. may your generosity be returned to you in kind from the karma gods
Be well

JasonHi Jason,
Thank you so much for your kind words, I know how hard it is to start a business and keep it running, I can more than easily cover the cost of my office rent, that’s is why I am offering it for free, because with just the 3 of us, it can get a little lonely rattling around a big office.
I just wanted to make sure that the other business is also a genuine small business owner or start up and when I posted an advert on Gumtree I got all sorts of not so genuine types as you could imagine.
Hopefully someone will give me some more ideas.
Cheers
MischelleJanuary 21, 2015 at 2:05 am #1177484Up::0What a great post Mischelle
I work in a shared office with two other businesses, I do pay rent but it makes coming to work so much better and this is the main pay off. There are 7 people across the 3 businesses and we all have no ego issues – this would kill the vibe!
So, having said that – think about the type of people or business that would gel well with your office. No one with a massive ego for starters!
I would also look to charging a nominal fee as people appreciate what they pay for far more than when they get it for free. Any serious business owners will genuinely benefit from having to have this expense even if it is only $50 per week/month.
Now to finding these people – This forum, Facebook groups, Networking groups and generally putting the feelers out.
Before I found my office space I already knew the people here but didn’t know they were looking for someone, a joint acquaintance mentioned it and the rest is history. When I was first here there was 4 people in total and now we are at 7, so finding the right people has been paramount to everyones happiness.
Best wishes with your search
January 21, 2015 at 2:55 am #1177485Up::0Someone will be willing to pay rent I am sure. Pity you are not on the Gold Coast, I am opening a branch office down there and that sort of thing would be perfect.
Let your professionals (lawyers, accountants etc) know that you are looking because these people often approached at the startup stage.

What a great idea about approaching my accountant, I will give him a call.
Sorry for the delay in reply, I was away working.
Cheers

You will soon identify some potential business owners. Ones that only have a mobile and no address are the ones you are looking for.
Ring them and see how you go…
February 5, 2015 at 1:57 am #1177489Up::0Hi Everyone,
We found a wonderful small business start up that is in civil construction, they are a great match for us and are already moving in tomorrow.
Thanks for everyone’s input and yes some of you were correct, they wanted to pay rent, so we had a small agreement drawn up and we are both excited to get together for a welcome coffee.
Thanks everyone

MischelleFebruary 5, 2015 at 2:21 am #1177491Up::0Hello Mischelle,
I’m not sure how much room you have.
But flying solo is the place to find people.I had an idea you may like if you do not find a permanent person or have more room you need to fill.
Why not make it a flying solo hotdesk?
What I mean by this is where flying solo members can take a break from working from home and spend a day or two there every now and again.Just an idea.
May be more work than you want given you are giving it all away for free.I love your post too, its funny how sometimes you have to prefix honest and free offers like yours with disclaimers because so many people think its too good to be true. Its sad how society has got to this stage thanks to all the cons going around.

I just wanted to update everyone. The Civil Construction company that is sharing our office is powering along, they have all their signage up outside the office and business is going great for them. They plan on sticking around for while, lovely people and great for the vibe of the office.
I also have another Flying Solo person sharing the office part time with us, so our little team doesn’t feel so lonely any more
Thanks to you all on Flying solo.
