Hi fellow soloists,

I have just about finished the business plan for a launch later this year. The accountant is happy with where I am at and the broker has come up with a way to get me the cash I need to start up a new construction business. Although I want to self fund most of my business there will always be times when the market isn’t suitable and I need to earn some “beer money” in between the bigger jobs.

As you can imagine I am now looking at the marketing side of the house. My focus is on getting the planning right to get the best returns I can from the work I do – hence”Intelligent” in the business name. I have secured the domain intelligentconstructions.com,au (a bit long but easy to remember) so I am on my way and will tackle the website next (I have played but it isn’t even close to ready) It is likely that I will be seeking some help from a talented soloist down the track.

The feedback I am after is on my first look at the Company’s logo and slogan. I have developed a couple of options – but am more than happy to take on your suggestions and ideas. I think I’m stuck with the title as that is the name of the Company.

So here it goes – Intelligent Constructions and Electrical; turning dreams into reality

my alternate is – Intelligent Constructions and Electrical – Intelligent Planning; Intelligent Results.

I did toy with …. making wives smile in Murrumbateman (but my wife gave me “the look” so I quickly ditched that one with a wry smile.

So for the logo I have come up with:

orSo am I close or do I need to go back to the drawing board?

Cheers

Craig

Hi Craig,

Appreciate it that you have gone out on a limb and asked for feedback. I don’t have have any answers but I hope in these questions you can find some of your own answers.

Who is your target market? High end/ budget end of town?
Are you looking for domestic or commercial jobs?
What is so unique about your construction company and why would I choose you?
Not sure if intelligence in planning is reflected in the logo.

Hope this helps in some way.

Cheers
Michael

I like the turning dreams into Reality, I suppose you now need to back that up.

Think I am with Michael on the logo, I get the symbolism and simplicity of the outline of a house, but its not showing intelligence, Just my thought.

Also I see that you have secured the business name “”Intelligent Constructions”” but you don’t seem to have “” Intelligent Constructions and Electrical”” I would have thought if you were going down that path you should be securing the business name up front.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the feedback. Your response was exactly the kind of thing I have been looking for. I have not locked in anything yet and I know I can’t get everything I want to across in a logo and a slogan. My intent was for the word intelligent, linked with turning dreams into reality would evoke a sub-conscious link between intelligence (the company) and dreams (the finished product). Maybe I need to do some more work on that!

I have developed what I believe is a unique approach in the planning process that, through a series of questions derives the customer’s end state without specifying how that is to be achieved. This methodology is my point of difference so to speak.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to break into the market with that approach as I don’t have a track record. To mitigate this duringthe start up phase I intend to self fund projects and use the intelligent planning side to deliver higher than average profit. I trust I can lever off my initial projects to kick start third party funded construction; allowing the intelligent planning to lead the way.

I take your point on “why would I use you” and will seek to address this as I progress the marketing side of the plan.

I appreciate your support.

cheers

Craig

Bert,

Thanks. I have the buisiness name secured as it is a company so no issues there – the electrical side is just too big for the domain. I thought I should keep the electrical side of the house as I have secured an exclusive deal doing electrical warranty work in the region and this, through word of mouth, is giving me some leads.

I’m with you on the logo; I’m not sure how better to link Intelligence and the simplicity of the house. The house and dreams seem to work – I see that my idea that the word would make that sub-conscious link doesn’t pass muster. I’ll keep working on it!

The truning dreams into reality is something that resonates with me – I’m turning my dreams into reality through this venture and I trust that my planning, workmanship and enthusiasm will do the same for others. We will see – I’m certainly getting the right feedback from my electrical customers (not that many dream about GPOs or light fixtures!) in relation to customer focus, job standard and site cleanliness.

Thanks again for your insights.

Cheers

Craig

Craig, I wasnt looking at the domain name, I did a business name / company search and couldn’t find the full name with electrical only the shorter one. Normally if you have it secured it would show up on the ASIC database

Bert,

Got it; the accountant has that in hand. He is in the process of having a company registered with that name. I will make a point of chasing him on it today. No real rush as I don’t start my long service leave until January; however, I have licensing to get, signwriting to get done, business documaentation to finalise so the sooner the better.

Cheers Craig
