    Dear IP Experts,

I know that a true non-provisional patent, done properly by a patent attorney or IP specialist will be very expensive, in the thousands……funds which I unfortunately don’t have to part with.

Is it worth lodging a provision patent myself so that I can actually approach business’ myself to see if they show interest in my product prior to manufacturing?

I know that protection is important, but how does one go about it when one simply doesn’t have the $ to spare to do it :-( .
I think I know what you are all going to say…that it’s an investment in my business etc etc, but I am trying to get things going on a shoestring budget. I do not make bucket loads of money, I have a family, a mortgage and I just don’t have tons to spare.

If you don’t have the funds, and you’re not interested in developing the idea yourself, then my suggestion would be to lodge a provisional patent, get a non-disclosure agreement signed before you speak with anyone, then approach a company with a view to selling the idea/concept to them.

You’ll know pretty quickly whether or not your idea is a worthwhile commercial venture.

    Wendy :)
