Hello
My name is johanna from sydney,
Am looking at starting a counselling business, but I can’t decide whether to have my own name or to make up a business name. I have a few choices to names but I can’t decide nor do I know what is the benefit to using your own name.com. I would really like some advice or feed back on this.Or is it just a personal preference.
Thank you I shall await your reply
January 17, 2016 at 9:13 am #1193212January 17, 2016 at 9:20 am #1193213Up::0Am a qualified counsellor, and would like to set up my own practice, but I cant decide whether to have my own name johanna.com or to have stick-by-me.com or stick-by-me-counselling.com.
As my business name and domain name.
I have been looking on goggle and see other counsellors with there own name and I see others with a a made up name. And I can’t decide what to do.Does that make sense?
Not sure what u would like to knowJanuary 17, 2016 at 9:33 am #1193214Up::0You can have your business name as Johanna if you like. But when it comes to your domain name, you should chose a search engine friendly name. I suggest that you do a keyword research and then decide your domain name. PM me if you need some suggestions or help in searching for a suitable domain name.

I don’t feel comfortable having my name out their
You see I was thinking of johannawaugh.com or johannacounselling.com or stick-by-me-counselling.com or stick-by-me.com which I like a lot better for a business name and domain but my problem is I can’t decide, and am not sure which direction to go in. Am not sure of the benefits to having your own name as your business name and domain? Is there any?January 18, 2016 at 5:12 am #1193219January 18, 2016 at 5:14 am #1193220January 18, 2016 at 5:59 am #1193221Up::0Hey
I think there’s a lot to be said for going with your own name. When you start out a lot of your customers might be searching for you, rather than a business name.
As for domain name, using keywords in it isn’t the golden ticket it once was in terms of ranking. I’d say only go for a keyword domain name if you think you can build a nice brand out of it.
I’m not a big fan of using hyphens in your domain as people tend to forget to type them.
Be sure to do a good search on your domain name – not just with domain name tools but in Google itself, to see if there’s anyone out there with a similar name doing the same thing.
Hope that helps.
Good luck!January 18, 2016 at 7:53 am #1193222Up::0cuteaussie45, post: 227177, member: 74086 wrote:Hello Bert

I have no idea about the marketing or SEO aspects of using your name against a business name, but just thinking if you make it a business name IMO it gives the feel of a larger more setup business, rather than someone by themselves, Its like my accountant is XYZ and associates, but he sits there by himself but it sounds better to me.
Also just thinking of potentially selling the business or bringing in a partner down the track, I wouldn’t want to buy into Johanna counselling as that kind of personalizes it to much. But than it has got the personal touch if you go with Johanna.
Just for myself I would never use my own name as my business name, but that’s just me.

Thank you bert for your reply, having had time to think about it I have decided to go with my name as a domain and as for a business name go for something else if thst makes sense.
Hi kate toon thank you for response am actual thinking of going for my own name as a domain, after thinking about it endlessly and doing searches on google and talking to people, who are in the same field as me say its better to go with your own name because if u want to grow then you can and it doesn’t limit you if that makes sense. Still trying to work out what that means?
Its so hard working out a business name and a domain name. Or to have a domain and business name the same.January 21, 2016 at 7:21 am #1193225Up::0cuteaussie45, post: 227376, member: 74086 wrote:I don’t really want to simplify it but thank you cshiel for your post.Thank you bert for your reply, having had time to think about it I have decided to go with my name as a domain and as for a business name go for something else if thst makes sense.

Its so hard working out a business name and a domain name. Or to have a domain and business name the same.Look at Dick Smith and Harvey Norman – they expanded and did okay.
I think focus on what works for NOW and for the next year or so. The future is blurry, bring it into focus when you know more.
Good luck!
