    Hi All

It’s been a while since I have “popped in” as we’ve been busy launching a new website.

We thought we would try Bigcommerce with this new site (our other sites are with Shopify) and so far so good.

Main bug bear is that although it is an Aussie company you have to pay in US dollars and with the exchange rate the way it is going that’s not so good (and a bit annoying).

However I must admit I am loving Bigcommerce apart from that.

    We would love any feedback.

    What needs reviewing?
    http://www.mensbraces.com.au

    What does your business do?
Online boutique selling fashion accessories. The new site is a niche store specialising in braces – suspenders not teeth :)
The intention is to move most of the braces on our existing site to the new site

    Who is you target market?
Men or women shopping for men. 18-100. Although our core market is probably 35-70. Although we do have kids braces too!

What specific concerns do you have?
SEO – of course! Usability. And trying to make it appeal to all ages (ie not just aimed at the older man)

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    Hey Wendy,

Great to see you back in the discussions, welcome back :)

Looks like a very clever idea to to tackle a specialist niche like this that builds on the broader offering that you have on your original site – look at all the categories over there I suspect you’d have dozens of niches you could potentially tap into!!

I’ve only had a quick look, but at first cruise around the site it looks to cover all the basics really well. I guess the beauty of some of these bigger platforms is that the core functionality is built in.

    Only two small comments:

    1. It would be great to see some more real photos of your customers, or models, wearing the braces in addition to the product shots. I know you already have a few, but some cute shots of the kids braces especially would go well maybe :)

    2. I reckon you could expand the about page to be slightly more personal to build some trust – just like you’ve already done on the other site where you talk about being a family business etc http://www.executiveaccessories.com.au/pages/about-us

I’m sure others will jump in too. All the best with it!

    Cheers,
    Peter

    Thanks for the feedback Peter.

You are right about the images its hard to find ones of kids that you can safely use that aren’t too “staged”. I think the best way maybe to talk to my friends with cute grandkids and bribe them to be models with a few pairs of braces!

Good feedback about the about us page. I will have a play with that.

    Thanks again.

I have changed the words on the About Us page (hopefully it sounds better) and managed to find some nic pics of kids wearing braces on iStock. I have put one on the category page and have one that will make a cool home page banner.

    Thanks again Peter.

    Hey Wendy,

I’d be interested to hear about the reasons behind your decision to useBigcommerce rather than Shopify.

Functionally the site seems fine. You have phone number prominently displayed, the checkout is simple to use, the site is easy to navigate.

From a design point of view, which is not my area, I think the site needs a bit of polish.
For example the drop down menu items under ‘Shipping’ need a bit of padding.
The grey header seems quite large, I didn’t notice the menu at first. Did you squeeze in the “Free Shipping on Orders over $100”, because that seems to have expanded it.

I agree with John, site definitely lacks some polish. Looks rather thrown together, which was a massive surprise when I was expecting a much more dapper website for braces!

    Hi John

    Thanks for the feedback.

It is still a work in progress and you are spot on about the grey header bar. I am still trying to work out how to get the “Free Shipping” to appear between the “search” and the FB “like button” rather than where it is. As you say this has caused the grey header bar to expand too much.

Same with the drop down menu under shipping. The look of that changed when I changed the side bar menu to rounded corners with shading. So I need to work out how to fix that too.

Why did we decide to go BigCommerce rather than Shopify? Initially it was because it was an Aussie company and we presumed you could pay in Aussie dollars. With the exchange rate going the way it is plus foreign exchange fees we thought this might be more cost effective. But they will only accept payments in US dollars! But we decided to go ahead anyway from a “don’t have all your eggs in one basket” point of view. And there is no cost saving by having multiple websites with either Shopify or BigCommerce.

Also from a web design point of view we wanted to see if the functionality and design was as good, better than Shopify.

We don’t have a technical background, but so far so good. Although clearly I still have lots to learn.

    Thanks again John.

    Hi Maclean and Matthew

Thanks for your feedback – much appreciated.

The website is most definitely a work in progress and any ideas you have would be more than welcome :)

It is heartening to hear that you think that braces are an “awesome subject matter” Matthew.

I am in the process of creating new banner images for the home page. And as you may have seen in my reply to John, I am trying to work out how to fix the drop down menu and header bar issue.

When you say thrown together Maclean, do you mean the structure, the way the products are presented or the colour scheme etc?

    Thanks again.

We are looking at changing the product “add to cart” area to something like the attachment. The current is the standard in the current theme.

    What do you think?
