    Hi Everyone!

I’m in the middle of starting up a small online clothing boutique. I’m going to start with women’s fashions and accessories & then I would like to move on to mens, kids & maybe even homewares.

It seems I’m up to the fun part of starting my business… researching wholesalers! There is SO many out there. WOW!
Just wondering if anyone has any tips, contacts, ideas on where I should look Have you had any previous experience with wholesalers? The good, bad and UGLY is what i’m after. I know a lot of this is going to be trial by error, but if you have any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

If you know of any designers that want to get their range out there as well, point me in their direction. I’d love to take a look at all their stuff.

I look forward to chatting with you all and swapping ideas & advice (not that I really have much experience to draw on at the moment, but slowly getting there!)

    Cheers

    Stacey :)

    Hi Stacey

Are you looking for handmade items or wholesale from overseas?

Please contact me via email [email protected]

I am about to relaunch children’s handmade clothing (veering away from hair accessories) and struggling to get back out there again after taking some time off due to a regular paid job!

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi Stacey,

Welcome to Flying Solo. What an exciting time for you but yes all the research of finding wholesalers is very fun, but extremely time consuming. If you would like to message me with a little more info on your visions, i may be able to help you and point you in the right direction.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Kind Regards
    Kim

    Hi Stacey

We have a fashion boutique in Gold Coast & sell online as well

I’m not sure what state you’re based in, but all sates have a wholesale district such as Westend in Brisbane or Collingwood in Melbourne. Make sure you take business cards and ABN when you visit – just door knock introduce yourself and that’s it – simple as that

Attend trade shows such as Reeds Gift Fair & Fashion Exposed to meet established and new suppliers under one roof

    Hope that helps :)

    Hi,

I would recommend you to stick to one particular segment of the market (e.g. Women’s clothing and accessories) rather than moving across different categories. As you have seen, the market is flooded with online stores and customers love to see the uniqueness. If you focus on so many segments, it will blow away your customers.

For wholesalers, I would recommend you to use trade directories. If you plan to import stuff and don’t know suppliers overseas, then worth spending some time and money on an import agent.

Each metro cities in Australia host trade shows in most of the industries. So worth keeping an eye on these. You will meet plenty of suppliers with innovative products and latest trends in the market.

Good luck with your venture. Hope all goes well with you.

    Cheers,
    Niraj

    Hi Stacey,

I am a small Melbourne based business and we make a clever and trendy new product — kids hobby mats. Its designed as a play n store solution for Lego lovers and other hobbies. I launched a month ago and its been very popular with local mums. I am now looking at expanding my market.

If you are interested, I could send you the details.

    Hi Stacey

I’ll provide some overall information to your question, however it is a bit broad, and you have something specific I can probably assist you.

A good wholesaler (or I would suggest you might use the term ‘supplier’) is one that:

    1. understands what margins you need to work with, and will provide you with at least 100% markup on their products
    2. has good paperwork and is highly organised
    3. can guarantee that the samples you are looking at will be the same as the delivered goods
    4. has a process for faulty products and can discuss that process with you
    5. will be able to provide you with accurate delivery times
    6. wants to do business with you, and is eager to maintain their relationship with you.

    Who is good?

If you are starting with a fashion line, I have many customers who I work with, who all have attended my Wholesale BootCamp course (They are learning how to become fantastic suppliers to stores). I’d recommend all of them.

Specifically, here are a few in the fashion area, as that is what you are looking for now: (please let them know Jenny sent you)!
