    Hi fellow flyers
I’m wondering if anyone can advise me on the best way to find an agent or distributor for my product, and how to go about approaching them. I am just starting out and only have 4 items to my range, but hope to build on the range if all goes well.
The things I am unsure of are
    1) Finding them! – I’ve googled and searched the yellow pages, but have found very little info. Most I find don’t have their own websites, so I basically know nothing about them.
    2) The right one – how do I assess if this agent or distributor is right for me? . Do I need to sell myself/product to them? Can I bombard them with questions?! Is it a 2-way relationship where lots of discussion takes place? Can I ask where and who they distribute to?
    3) I’ve been told that with a distributor, you need to go “exclusive” with them and not sell through any other avenues. They look after all invoicing, order filling etc. With an agent you can sell through other avenues. You look after all invoicing, chasing up payments, filling order etc. Have I understood this correctly? Is there anything else I need to consider.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It’s proving difficult to find this information myself, so would love to hear from anyone with info.

    thanks!
    Lou

    Hello Lou,

If your product is able to be sold effectively through distributors, you should have an idea of the type of business / individual you’d like representing you. If that’s the case it’s as simple as having a discussion and you are quite at liberty to ask as many relevant questions you like. If your product represents good potential, distributers would be only too happy to take it on.

Exclusive agreements are fine if minimum performance criteria are set and agreed to otherwise you may find yourself with a distributor that’s just collecting products and will sell whatever they can. At least with performance criteria you can leave yourself the option of taking exclusivity away if they constantly under perform.

    Hi Harry

Thank you very much for your input, really appreciated. Some great points you’ve made that I didn’t know about. Do you know how I can set about finding distributors…it’s proving quite elusive!

    thanks again
    cheers

That really depends on your product, where you’d like to distribute and who you think would be ideal distributors.

You also have to be clear on what’s in it for them and does that make your product viable for them?

Once you establish who might be ideal – contact them and ask the question.

    Hi Lou,

Can you give an indication of what market your product is in?.

In my experience, distributors and agents tend to specialise in certain markets and forum members may be able to give you better advice if you indicate which market you are looking at.

    Cheers

    Chris

    Thanks again Harry, and Chris!

I’m a fine art photographer and looking for alternative format to sell my images – to get them into a different place in the market other than galleries. I have produced some bookmarks with images and verses, after deciding there was not much available in this area. I see my market as bookstores and giftshop type retail outlets who sell cards and point of sale items.

Hope this helps – any more advise hugely appreciated as I just can’t seem to find listing of distributors.

    thanks!!
    Lou

    Hi Lou,
I know in the past Karen C has recommended the Gift and Homewares Association. There might be some helpful links for you on this thread:

    Good luck in your hunt,
