i got a phone call yesterday from abc asking me to put my product on the new inventors abc network

would this be a powerful enough marketing tool now to get my product sold?

i hear its a pretty big show, would there be alot of investors watching it and would it pay to now invest in my international ip?

has tv ever not worked for anyone?

    regards mike

Does TV work? Well there is a huge difference in TV ads and being on a TV show.

    My suggestion is this:

    1. Call the ABC back, talk to one of the producers and ask about who watches etc. They will have lots of useful info you can then assess for application to your situation.

2.Go to the ABC New Inventors website, and select maybe 6 or so inventors (Maybe in the same industry/invention of similar complexity/development stage as yours) and then ring them up. See what response they got, how they were contacted, what sort of people contacted them, what lessons they have learned. I’d contact a range of people from those that appeared a few weeks ago to those a year or so ago to get the full range.

Then you will know exactly what your next steps are that you must/maybe/don’t need to take.

A quite simple but totally resolving process ;)

    Hi Mark

id id some online marketing for a product that had an award from the new inventors… they got a lot of publicity, and 2 years later they were bought by a big company… so why not? It can’t hurt…

    good luck

I agree with Gab, it’s not going to hurt. If you win, it’s a badge of honour to go with the free PR you’ll get.

I agree with Gab and Chris – Theres not really much you can lose by going on the show and it’s a huge amount of free publicity.

there is plenty to lose – IP for one thing. Another is capacity to potentially meet any surge in demand. That is why it is worth doing some backgrounding first. Otherwise it’s like going on a hike and not checking the weather forecast and getting prepared… a few hours on the phone can provide all the confidence, or highlight any bases that are worth covering.

With such a unique product, I would hope that by this stage Mike has already protected his IP. (NB: I’ve spoke to Mike and know what his product is)

As for any potential surge in demand, what’s better – sitting there with no sales, or too many? If it surges that much, means you’re selling it too cheaply. If you STILL can’t keep up with the demand, then just ensure you manage it properly, be transparent with turnarounds, etc.

I understand the risk of damaging your brand by not being prepared to meet demand, but I think it’s a situation easily handled.

Look at Apple, after how many product releases they STILL can’t get supply vs demand right. In fact, I’d go as far to say that it’s a marketing tactic that they use willingly.

But you’re right, it’s always worth researching. But I believe that’s what he’s already doing, thus this thread! :)

The New Inventors is one TV show I enjoy watching as it is on just before Spicks and Specks.

Any publicity is good publicity and its FREE.

This show will help get you and your product out there, and after all itsnt this what we all want at some time or other.

Go for it, have a possitive attitude that your product is so good it will win.
Please let us know when your products episode airs as you will have a bunch of Flying Soloists cheering for you

    Hi Mike,
Thanks for your private message to share your product information. I suggest you make it public on the forum as you will get lots of other ideas for your business from the community. In regard to grants for your business, you are ineligible for Commercialisation Australia as you have already produced a commercial product. You are however eligible for R&D Tax concession and in the future EMDG.

If you had funds, you could access a business planning grant (50% funding).

Another option you may want to consider is entering a business plan competition which I have successfully done for a previous venture. You can get up to $100,000 in seed capital.

Congratulations Mike, this is such a coup for you. How exciting! I am doing the victory dance for you already! Wooo-hoooo!

From your point of view, what’s the best possible outcome that could come from this? My thoughts are that you need to go into it with a plan for how you’ll use the exposure (and the video – if the ABC will let you use it with prospective clients) to reach your goal, regardless of whether that’s selling direct to the public, finding a distributor or selling the business to someone else.

As King mentioned, there are others who’ve been down this path before you, some with spectacular success, so talking to them is an awesome idea. (Go King!)

In addition, I would make sure that I had a super-schmick website online prior to the show airing, including very compelling reasons for people to add themselves to your database (so that if the upswing does turn out to be too big to handle you do at least have a way to keep in touch with your prospects).

Now, on to more important things… when do we get to see your smiling face on our telly screens?

    Congratulations again!
    Jayne
