    I’d love some advice please!
    I own a Market Research business specialising in Mystery Shopping and I have big plans to grow the business this year, but I have a minimal marketing budget.

    My industry is completely focused on going after the “big” retail giants and there’s a lot of competition to land the contract. Recently I’ve been speaking to small business owners at forums and the like and have been amazed how many small business are interested in our services but always thought they were too expensive.

    This morning I’m off to organise new business cards and had the idea of getting some different cards printed as well. I was thinking something I can leave behind at any business that I visit (local coffee shop, vet, Dr surgery, hairdresser etc) that say something along the lines of;

    “You were just visited by a Mystery Shopping expert”
    The card would list our brief services, my contact details and perhaps on the back, room for me to write a personal comment or a little rating for the service.
    Or even have something printed like;
    1 thing that I loved about today’s visit….
    1 thing that could have improved today’s visit….
    and then I could hand write the answer (the coffee was perfect but the cup was chipped or Brad was extremely helpful but smelled strongly of cigarette smoke)

    The idea is still forming in my head but if anyone has suggestions, I’d love to hear them and of course if you are a small business owner and someone left a card like that at your business, how would you feel? Would you want the feedback, would you see it as an opportunity to consider Mystery Shopping or would it seem tacky or desperate?

    The cards would clearly state that they were not Mystery Shopped, but we can help them if they are interested in our services to improve their customer service and become more profitable.

    Your thoughts?

    I think it’s a great idea. I used to do mystery shopping and have often had below-par experiences that I’d like to share with the business owners! Send me some cards, I’d be happy to leave them around my local shops etc. :)

    Hi Jen,

    I like the idea overall but maybe not all shop keepers would welcome your unsolicited opinions. Perhaps your card could simply say what you do and invite them to contact you if they would like to hear a couple of obligation free observations about their particular business.

    All best,

    Lindsay

    It is a good idea.

    For those shops who don’t care about your opinions — they are unlikely to be your target audience. For those who do — then you’ll be well on your way to getting hired.
