I have developed a model for a community website portal based on postcode – explained on umbrella site at http://www.your-local-website.com. The pilot website can be found at http://www.aus4017.com. I have to add online shopping and an auction site and then I’m into pre-launch.

    I would appreciate any feedback.
    Thanks in advance.

    1. What needs reviewing? (i.e. logo, website, idea etc…)
    2. What does your business do?
    3. Who is your target market?
    4. What specific concerns do you have?

    Hi “yourlocalsherrif”,

Not sure what site you want as to review as both are up but i’ll give it a first off go, pending you answer to lurtov’s post re what you actually want reviewed.

To me the whole site of both looks very busy in a bad way. Too many colours and patterns and my eye doesn’t know where to look.

Also I think you would be wise to get some professional logo/header design work done. In both cases they are quite poor, and on the your-local-website one you have used “Comic Sans” by the look of it which is a massive design “no-no”. On the other one the text based logo needs “anti-aliasing” of the text at the very minimum and to be moved down, while the logo at left is way too jammed up against the borders.

Overall the site doesn’t tell me what it is, who it’s targeted at or why I should stay, and to be blunt if I came across it i would instantly hit back. If it’s meant to target different areas by postcode there is no neat, clean postcode search or similar and I can’t even tell what country it’s aimed at without really looking.

Sorry to be blunt but that’s the way I see it!

    Hi

First impression of the sites was shear terror. In fact, i couldn’t stay on the 4071 site for more than 10 seconds before leaving. Now, i’m not a designer, but thats why i pay my design guy to make sure my sites don’t look like that.

After the initial shock, i did however go back and put the design of the site aside to look at the concept.

I like the idea of postcode specific portals, however, i only see them being of use if they offer a quicker and easier way to find information than other alternatives, including google, or if the postcode in question is particularly proud of their suburb (the shire in sydney being a good example of suburb pride)

I’m assuming that all of the portals will have a URL of http://www.ausXXXX.com?

According to the australia post postcode file there are 3,280 valid australian postcodes including 2,630 Delivery Areas (real geographic locations). Does this mean that you will need to purchase and manage 2630 domains??

It also opens up the question, what if one of those URL’s are already taken when you got to buy it?? eg. http://www.aus2575.com (this would be my local site) is currently available for anyone to purchase and throw your whole naming system out the window.

I would have a big think about exactly why people are going to go to your local sites over other sites?? If i want to buy a car i’m heading to the trading post or carsales, ebay for pretty much anything else, yellow pages for local businesses and google for the rest. If you can get yoursite to rank high in search engines then your achance of driving traffic to your sites, but thats about the only way i can see them working.

Sorry to be so negative, but thats my 2 cents worth.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers
