@Asovale possible early steps depending on where you’re at:

• A design on paper
• Make a physical prototype/model
• Make a working prototype
• Prove it works
• Talk to surfers about whether they need/want something like this
• Talk to an IP lawyer about steps to protecting your idea or product
• Talk to surf shops to see if they’d buy it
• Talk to board makers to see if they’d use it or license it from you

Should help you make progress while spending a minimum of dollars.

Hey @Asovale! Whilst not a patent attorney, I am a trade marks attorney so do a lot of work (and referrals) in this general ‘idea protection’ area. A patent must be NEW when you file for it, meaning you should keep the details secret until you’ve sought advice. Disclosing too soon can stop you being able to protect the invention (if it is something indeed patentable). If you need to disclose details to a designer or similar ensure they sign an appropriate Non Disclosure agreement first so that your disclosure to them doesn’t count against you if you want to consider the patent/design protection path.
