HI, just found this great website and forum yesterday. I am mother of a one year old and I am setting up a business as a post-natal doula. Clearly my problem is no one has any idea what a doula is!

Newborn Mothers nurtures mum so she they can best take care of baby. I offer in-home mother and baby massage, Ayurvedic lifestyle and diet consultations for new mothers and debriefing on birth experiences. I also offer workshops preparing couples for their new arrival which include baby-proofing relationships, creating new social networks, dealing with sleep and breastfeeding and more. Eventually I’d like to expand into offering corporate packages to employers, so that when a staff member has a baby they are provided with a smoother transition to parenthood.

I believe it’s a much needed service in our culture, but selling it is quite another matter. We still have a post-feminist culture of super hero mums who don’t want to ask for help. New mothers often live away from their parents and particularly in WA even the fathers of their children work away. It takes a village to raise a child, and Newborn Mothers is village of the new millennium!

Things I’d love some help with are:

    • choosing a business mentor
    • networking with other mums
    • professional indemnity insurance
    • public liability insurance

I’ll post these topics into relevant forums and look forward to seeing what you all have to say.

From one mum to another – good luck with your business Julie.

A valuable website that has relevant information for mums including tips on balancing work with family, networking, PR etc, is:

    http://www.motivatingmum.com

Alli at Motivating Mum often arranges networking lunches, brainstorming sessions and seminars. She is based in Melbourne, but believe she is hoping to organise some sessions in all areas.

    All the best,
    Shelley

    Congratulations on your new business.

This is the best place to get professional indemnity that I have found.
http://www.bizcover.com.au/ You can talk to a real person here in Australia as well.

There are various networks around the country including the
Women’s Network http://www.womensnetwork.com.au that has branches all over Australia and Business Chicks http://www.businesschicks.com.au
Both these ones have quarterly magazines as well as online opportunities, not just local. Have a look under FS also under the Meet Up pages for WA http://www.flyingsolo.com.au/forums/wa/

    Wishing you much success.

    Hi Julia,

Excellent biz idea, all the very best with it : )

Regarding your questions and as a new mum to a 5mth old heres a site and a lady that SAVED me!

    http://www.cradletokindy.com.au

There is a massive gap between midwife services and the information you need when you get home so Im thrilled that you are looking for fill the gap.

Choosing a mentor: Consider what your weakest point is, mine is finance so I have a friend who mentored me on that and a personal coach who helps me keep my mindset on track both personally and professionally.

You may choose something like business masterminds if its overall sharing of info that you want http://www.businessmasterminds.com.au/

Networking: take a look on linked in for groups, such as a mumpreneur group which would complement face to face networking as I imagine you will be juggling your time so getting out to lots of events will be hard. Business chicks is great and also look out for speed networking on linked in events – I went to one in Sydney last year at the Regus it was fab!

I have all my insurances arranged with Enrizen http://www.enrizen.com.au/ who find the best deal with the insurers, I have been happy with their service and pricing Chat to Denielle Bates on 0424 406 351, they are in North Sydney.

For finance packages I love Xero … if you ned one that is! http://www.xero.com

Good luck and I look forward to hearing more from you when you are up and going : )

    Kindest
    Sarah

Join the Belly Belly forum, and friend Kelly of Belly Belly on Facebook.

She’s all about the doulas, and there’s a tonne of doula service subsections on her forum.

    Hi Julia,

Congratulations on your business, I think it’s a great service to be offering!

In terms of networking, we have a couple of clients that have set up networks specifically for mum’s that could be worth checking out:

http://www.inspiringmums.com.au – this has been set up by a mum for mums, as a ‘community’ and provides resources and guides amongst other things to their network. I imagine your services would be good to have as a resource for the network!

A new one – which might need a bit of tweaking depending on ‘how’ you want to promote/provide your services – http://www.dealsformum.com – similar ‘concept’ to other websites offering/promoting ‘deals’, but this one is specific to mums. So, if you list a ‘deal’ or promotion, all their members are notified – all being mums, so you are targeting the precise audience.

    All the best with it!!
