    Hi everyone,
    I’ve just signed an exclusive distribution agreement for a stationery product from Germany. I’m in the process of setting up my own online store etc, etc, however this product would be ideal to sell through an outlet such as Office Works or Staples.

    Does anyone have any advice (complete novice here!), for drafting a proposal or structuring a meeting with the buyers from these super retailers? Also, an idea of what margins they expect?

    Hi Lizzy,
    Others will have a lot more experience on this, but from a few people I’ve spoked to about supplying the huge retailers is that it requires to supply huge volumes with proven demand, and given you’re in the early stages this would be a big leap. My gut feel would be to consider getting some early runs on the board with sales through your website and smaller retail channels to prove demand (or potential demand) before approaching bigger players.
    But… that may be small thinking so obviously consider all options and chat/research with as many people as possible!
    Sounds like a good opportunity :)

    Thanks so much Peter, I really appreciate your thoughts on this.

    The product has demonstrated demand in international markets, just not here yet. I think you’re right though, I need to launch and start the swirl here and then hopefully I’ll be able to make more of a case!

    Volumes via my German supplier should be fine too as from what I understand, they’re already supplying other global markets with high volumes. Saying that however, it’s certainly something I’ll check out.

    Sounds good. And in that case perhaps your supplier could add value to your case to bigger retailers here with examples of success in similar markets overseas – not sure if a joint proposal could work. I suspect there are also agents who specialise in getting into the bigger groups.
