    Hi lovely soloists!

I’ve got to let out a cry for help as I cannot move along with the fitout for my cafe enterprise.

I am trying to fit out a shop for heavy cooking and need reliable and most importantly honest contractors. We need services of hospitality plumbers, electricians and ventilation specialists.

I DO NOT WANT to deal with shop fitters anymore, who put at least a 200% margin in any job. I am also tired of “so you are new, gotcha!” sort of contractors.

So if anyone had a previous positive experience in working with contractors directly and could recommend anyone, I would highly appreciate it.

    Thank you heaps lovely soloists!

    Cheers

    Hello Olga,

A suburb might help people make recommendations.
If you can find someone good who is local, then you’re not paying travel times.

You may consider using a service such as

    Homeimprovementpages.com.au

You will get responses form up to 3 contractors and quotes that you are under no obligation to accept.

THe other option is to ask the store owners around you who they use. They may have a good recomendation.

My husband is a painting contractor – so I can clue you in on some tips. Unfortunatly, I cant reccomend anyone personally as we operate in Far North Queensland.

I would recommend that you only use contractors licenced with your states building authority – for NSW it is the Master Builder Association of NSW their website is here: http://www.mbansw.asn.au/

I dont know about NSW, but the requirements for membership in QLD are quite rigourous – anyone that is registered has a proven standard of work. Also, if you are a registered member and anyone complains about your workmanship/ripping off people they will investigate & the penalties can be quite bad. This means that for you, as the customer you are assured of a high standard of work and professionalism.

In QLD if you are registered with the BSA, it is a requirement that you list your membership number on all quotes and invoices. Most registered contractors (I know we do) also include their member number on their cards and advertising. Just so that people such as yourself can know immediatly that they are reliable and trustworthy.

If you search on the NSW BSA website (above) you should be able to find a directory of contractors in your area. Otherwise, just give them a call. You will also find on their website a whole range of information regarding contracts and insurance. We print off our contracts directly from the BSA site here in QLD. They are very good and so very VERY worth it for peace of mind.

I would also recommend NOT choosing someone who isnt registered. Your legal recourse is very slim, and you may end up with having to pay the cost of fixing their shonky work.

I hope this helps and I hope you find good people to complete your fitout. Having the right man on the right tools makes all the difference!

    Lovie

    Hi Olga,

I was in a similar situation as you and equally as frustrated.
I went onto gumtree and found some trades people. I asked them for an hourly rate and was satisfied with every one of the ones who worked for me.
There are a lot of talented people out there who are just trying to make a living.

    Steve
