Not sure if this is right place to post this but here goes.
I’m trying to find out if there’s a consensus here as to whether you prefer to use your smartphone in Portrait or Landscape mode when using the web.
My preliminary searching finds mainly dated info relating to when mobile web use was just cranking up…not owning our lives.
Some stuff seems obvious (to me) like rotating videos etc to landscape, maybe games too (dunno, I don’t use them).
Personally I prefer Portrait for everything and tend to avoid sites that require Landscape to use effectively…but there’s no accounting for taste, my partner does everything apart from calls in Landscape mode, so there’s no kitchen table agreement on what’s best or easier to use.
The reason I’m interested is, I’m finding on a website I’m developing it’s very easy to favour one “view” over another, and to keep them both useful, let alone perfect is tough…
Any opinions or links consumed with gratitude.
Thanks

Thanks.
So far, 2 nil.
August 28, 2017 at 9:27 pm #1210266Up::0Portrait here, I have even turned screen rotation off, as it becomes a pain, and my 18 and 16 year old are portrait as well.
August 28, 2017 at 11:40 pm #1210267Up::0I’ve found that portrait is the most preferred format for smartphone users. This goes across Apple and Android. Scientiamobile.com in the US quotes a figure of 91% portrait usage for users of smartphones.
https://www.scientiamobile.com/page/smartphone-vs-tablet-orientation-whos-using-what… and on auto screen rotation – second that! A nice idea that’s not very practical and totally annoying.

Looks like my natural preference for portrait view is in the “normal” range.
@ozcart thanks for the link, at first glance it looks like exactly what I was looking for, will read it in full a bit later.
August 30, 2017 at 2:30 am #1210269Up::0Portrait for me too. I can’t say I’ve seen many people use their phone landscape apart from watching videos.
August 31, 2017 at 4:06 am #1210270Up::0I use my phone in portrait out of habit, but often move to landscape when the text is too small (and the site’s not very responsive) or I’m watching videos. My kids (6& tend to use the phone in landscape, probably because they’re used to tablets or watching videos, rather than reading on it.

Sound a bit like my grandkids (tablets-or knock off your phone if you’re not watching) nearly 3 and 4.75I use landscape much the same way…seems some businesses may be missing out if their portrait view is below par.
Off topic but related to the rapid change in technology and how we use it:
Rang son, to see how GK’s were going, my precocious grand daughter sounded very grown up when she spoke to me…commented to son, that it wouldn’t be long and he’d be teaching her to drive…his answer was “do you really think they’ll need to know how to drive”
Cheers
